Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted November 2, 2009 Members Posted November 2, 2009 PUC's water rescue heroes By Larry Pena FOR THE STAR Thursday, October 29, 2009 The American Red Cross honored three Pacific Union College students this week for their heroic actions in an aquatic rescue this summer at Leoni Meadows, a Seventh-day Adventist campground in Northern California. Matt Freedman and brothers Robert and Nolan Negrete, who were counselors at the campground, saved another counselor from drowning in the nearby Cosumnes River. The three, along with others involved in the rescue, were named Red Cross National Heroes. They received the Good Samaritan award at the Sacramento Sierra Chapter of the American Red Cross, in a “Hometown Heroes” ceremony on Oct. 13. The students were also interviewed at the Channel 3 newsroom in Sacramento. The incident occurred during the first week of the summer, when several of the counselors went for a swim in a nearby river on their afternoon off. They soon discovered a natural rock slide, not realizing that a strong current at the base was sucking the water down and under a nearby rock. One counselor was pulled under and unable to fight his way to the surface, despite being a trained lifeguard. Robert Negrete and several others tried to reach the drowning man from the rocks above but by the time Freedman found a stick long enough to reach, the counselor had lost consciousness. Two other counselors began diving and after several attempts found his body wedged in the rocks and held by the current. The rescuers worked together to pull the counselor out and begin CPR while Freedman and another counselor searched out the nearest cell phone service area to call 911. They found reception near the river where there had been no cell service earlier that day. By the time the paramedics arrived, the counselor was regaining consciousness and able to walk to the ambulance. After a precautionary one-night stay in the hospital, the rescued man was back at camp with nothing more to show for his close call other than cuts and bruises. the story Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony. Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?
