Now's the time to pray the Lord's Prayer. It's just inside the New Testament. Put it into the first person singular: "My Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name" (Matt. 6:9; Jesus said, "In this manner, ... pray." No matter who you are, or how unworthy you are, you are given the right to walk in past all the holy angels to the throne of God with these words). Save me from bringing disgrace on Your name. "Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven" (vs. 10; let me do or say something today that is right). "Give me this day my daily bread" (vs. 11; and the inexpressible joy of being satisfied with what my portion is of either the temporal or spiritual kind. Thank You for my portion!) "And forgive me my debts," (vs. 12a; that is—my sins). This credit card debt is a constant load I can't carry; oh, to breathe free again! Please teach me to say no next time I go to the mall; and yes, to say no to self all day. "As I forgive my debtors" (vs. 12b; that means I practice self-denial until I pay my credit card balance; at the same time I pay my debt of forgiveness to those who have wronged me personally and painfully. It hurts, but yes, I do). "And do not lead me into temptation, but deliver me from the evil one" (vs. 13a; any temptation to any sin is greater than I have the strength to endure, of myself. Haldog Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 More appropriately called the "disciples prayer" as Jesus told His disciples to pray like that, He didn't pray like that Himself. Also, it is an Old Covenant prayer for the time before His crucifixion. For example, the prayer asks for forgiveness from sins. Jesus forgave us ALL our sins at the cross. There is no need to keep asking Him over and over again to do what He did 2000 years ago. That is expressing unbelief in the finished work at the Cross. Jesus is not going to climb back up on the cross every time we ask Him to forgive us so that He can forgive us. Jesus said it was finished and it is! Praise God! We as New Covenant believers have better promises and can pray more like Jesus did Himself or as Paul did in numerous places. Shalom Quote "You may not agree with everyone. They are very encouraging to read and to take to heart! And the Lord’s Prayer is loaded with importance! Much more so than commonly realized… As I keep on praying this prayer at least every morning and every night I keep discovering more meaning in those Hebrew words behind that which is being found in KJV and other modern translations… In fact, I believe the main focus of the prayer has been obscured and largely lost in most translations. Act 8:22 Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you. Why would Peter tell this man to pray for forgiveness if it were already done at the cross like you say? Wouldn't that be useless? Would he not be expressing unbelief? 1Jn 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. It dosn't appear that John got your memo either. Why would he say this under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, if it were nothing but a useless expression of doubt. Quote
