One of my most used 'tools' in the kitchen is a rice cooker. Yet I have never used it for rice.

I use it to cook my steel cut oatmeal.

I often use it to make a quick supper lunch, using Knorr Sidekick or Liptons pasta package, and then add some worthington Diced Chicken, or a can of Salmon.

I've never heard of such a thing. My rice cooker is called a pot, how does yours differ from that?

We've used a rice cooker in our home for about 15 years now. It is a kitchen appliance I've come to love. Three or four times a week we'll use it to cook rice (Jasmine and Basmati are our favorites). Once a week, we'll use it to steam-soften and warm tortillas, and ocassionally we'll use it to steam vegetables.

The rice cooker is one of the most important small appliances that we own. I will agree with using Thai Jasmine. Open the bag and it smells like popcorn. IMO it is the best. For the diehards who just must use brown rice there is also a Thai Jasmine Brown variety but you , probably, have to look for it in an Asian market....and it is quite a bit more expensive than the regular. I do not care for brown rice because it tastes 'too starchy" to me.

Stan, I hadn't thought about using the rice cooker for steel cut oats. I don't especially care for oatmeal but I don't mind the steel cut variety. I shall certainly try it.

Another very useful gadget is the 'grilled sandwich maker'. I like the fact that you do not have to slather butter/margarine on the slices of bread in order to grill your cheese sandwich or whatever else decide you to make. I see them quite regularly in thrift shops for under 5 bucks..............

I have a rice cooker. I also have 3 crock pots, all in different sizes.

White rice is probably not one of the best foods known to mankind. I remember hearing in Bangladesh that they treat the rice so thoroughly that all the Vitamin A is removed, and people were becoming blind through vitamin A deficiency.

Whole rice is rather more nutritious.

I am not sure whether that means one should always eat the potato skins!

I don't touch the white stuff. Same with bread. I NEVER eat white bread. I would rather go without.

The skins themselves are actually indigestible. But it's the flesh right under the skins that is so nutritious. If you cook your potatoes, then slip the skins off, you will not lose that nutritious part like you do when you peel them first. Personally, I always preferred to just eat them skin and all - much less work.

Avoid eating green potato skins. Green skins will taste bitter due to the presence of a moderately poisonous alkaloid. Exposure of the potato to fluorescent light or sunlight causes skin greening.

I haven't bought a rice cooker because all the ones I've seen are made of aluminum. I refuse to cook using aluminum pots. How do you get around that?

I don't use aluminum cookware either. I found one with a non-stick coating. It's a Rival. I bought it locally, but if you want one and can't find one anywhere, try looking at Amazon.com. They have just about everything.
