I think that can be true. The challenge for the church, and not just the Adventist one, is to move beyond lamenting the lack of heart obedience to actually discipling new believers to walk in the Spirit.

To tell you the truth ... I really haven't seen this as in issue in our church. It might be in other denominations. But then I am not as familiar with them so I couldn't really tell you.

I see the bigger problem in our church as legalism. It is what we are warned of by our prophet. And it is what I see as a growing issue in our church today.

There are two main factions today in Laodicea as there were in Christ's day. The legalists and the liberals. But neither have the truth.

"Faith is the condition upon which God has seen fit to promise pardon to sinners. Not that there is any virtue infaith whereby salvation is merited, but because faith can lay of the merits of Christ, the remedy provided for sin." E.G. White, Review & Herald, Nov.4, 1890.

Daily appropriating to ourselves the merits of Christ (by claiming them for it is our privilege to do so) is the only remedy provided for sin, that is, the only means by which the sinner may obtain pardon and peace and power from the Holy Spirit to keep him from sinning. The only way to be kept from being a legalist or a liberal! The only way to become a Christian, a child of God!

Neither the legalists nor the liberals in Christ's day were trusting in the merits of a Saviour who was to come and neither the legalists nor the liberals of our day are trusting solely in the merits of a Saviour who has come in order to receive the grace by which they would be enabled to work the works of God. These trust partly to God and partly to themselves. They do not look to God to be kept by His power, but depend upon watchfulness against temptation and the performances of certain duties for acceptance with Him. There are no victories in this kind of faith. Such persons toil to no purpose. Their souls are in continual bondage, and they find no rest until, with the simple faith of a little child, they learn to rest in the all-sufficient merits of a crucifed and risen Saviour.

Then they are clothed with the glistening vesture of Christ's righteousness and they are made more than conquerors over selfishness and sin and the Holy Spirit impresses Christ's character upon them.
