I don't know how much history you remember but at the end of the first Gulf War the Iraqis took up arms themselves to overthrough Saddam. The first President Bush had promised to support them and failed to do so. As a result Saddam slaughtered them. That is one of the reasons we have had problems the last year and a half. Many Iraqis do not trust that the US will really follow through with its commitment.

So my point is that the Iraqis did choose freedom and democracy for themselves at the end of the first Gulf War. At least many of them did. But they were crushed by Saddam.
