Woody Posted November 30, 2009 Author Posted November 30, 2009 Mary Jo Coady, a Massachusetts woman down on her luck, is taking comfort from an image of Jesus Christ she sees on her iron. The image reassures her that "life is going to be good." Coady, who recently separated from her husband and had her hours cut at work, noticed the religious imagery when she spotted the iron on the floor in her daughter's bedroom. The image appears on the bottom of what can only be characterized as a dirty old iron. Nevertheless, Coady, the secretary at a medical office, will preserve the image, and buy a new iron. Coady, mother of two, finds a message of hope, of divine revelation, on the bottom of a dirty old iron. Only religious delusion could offer one comfort in such circumstances. Hemant Mehta, The Friendly Atheist, has this to say about Iron Jesus and the media's mini circus that has sprung up around a dirty old iron: "I can understand why Mary thinks she sees Jesus in the iron, but the fact is we’ve evolved to see faces even when none are there. The truth is: there’s nothing special about this iron at all and it’d be foolish to think anything more of it. Now don’t you have some real news to cover?" The sad fact is, for some, this is real news. Many suffer religious delusions. Many are willing to believe that the bottom of a dirty old iron is divine providence, and a message from above. The whole thing is tragic and sad; and human, all too human. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Guest Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 At least you didn't turn the picture sideways. Quote
Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted December 1, 2009 Members Posted December 1, 2009 Is it supposed to be a profile or frontal face? Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony. Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?
Woody Posted December 1, 2009 Author Posted December 1, 2009 It looks to me like the figure is doing yoga. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Administrators Gail Posted December 1, 2009 Administrators Posted December 1, 2009 I see a scared man either trying to paddle his canoe to get away or on a jumping horse. Woody Posted December 1, 2009 Author Posted December 1, 2009 Good ones Gail. Now that you mention it ... I agree and can see that also. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Woody Posted December 1, 2009 Author Posted December 1, 2009 Interesting article Redwood. What is really interesting is there was nothing on the news here in Mass about it???? pk Now I don't know this to be true pk ... but perhaps it is that those in that state are used to these kinds of things ... where the rest of the country is not. So this would be considered 'news' for us and not for those in Mass. ?? Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Guest Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 They figured those Massachusinites didn't need to know... Quote
Woody Posted December 1, 2009 Author Posted December 1, 2009 Well ... all I know is that it is not wise to put one's faith in an iron. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.

Woody Posted December 1, 2009 Author Posted December 1, 2009 Oh that's right. I had forgotten. But best to lay low when mentioning that name around here. A word to the wise is sufficient.
