Woody Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 Does anyone know what kind of bird this is? I assume it is a hawk. But what kind. It was in our front yard this morning feasting on one of our rabbits. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Members phkrause Posted December 3, 2009 Members Posted December 3, 2009 Well Redwood according to my Bird Book, it looks like a Roadside Hawk. The only problem is they are not west coast birds. There basicly in Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Dottie Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 I think it is a Coopers Hawk. This is my source: http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Coopers_Hawk/lifehistory Quote
Amelia Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 I agree with the Coopers Hawk ID. They are great neighborhood hunters. If you have a bird feeder in your yard, the local Coopers will keep an eye on it for snacks. Dr. Shane Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 I use to eat rabbits. I didn't share with the hawks either. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity
Members phkrause Posted December 5, 2009 Members Posted December 5, 2009 Boy Shane what a selfish pig you were. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Dr. Shane Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 I ate pigs too. That was before I saw the Light. Now I limit myself to veggie sausage. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity
Dr. Shane Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 Once upon a time I ate bear, squirrel, rabbit, pig and shrimp. I never ate ants, cats, dogs, snake, shark or iguanas. I ate duck, bison, deer, pheasants and even pigeons. Probably the worst I ever ate was day-old doughnuts out of a dumpster. Those were pretty hard and difficult to bite into but I was pretty hungry. Overaged Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 I agree; it is likely a Cooper's Hawk, but a very young one - it is quite small. This reminds me of a time when we had pet rabbits. Our favorite one, "BOOTS," was a real Houdini escape artist. He was always getting out of his cage, to of course feast on the lush grass on the lawn. (3 acres). Guess he thought it was better than those nasty pellets we kept giving him?? Anyways, everytime BOOTS would get out, I had to get him as quickly as possible and put him back in the barn due to coyotes and hawks. We have a lot of red tailed hawks here. One morning I looked out the window. I was in my housecoat, as I had just gotten out of the shower, and there was BOOTS, in the clutches of a red tailed hawk; he was literally "screaming" and without thinking too hard about it, I grabbed a broom and charged out onto the frost-covered grass, to rescue the fool. I had on absolutely nothing but the housecoat! What a shock to the system! It was minus 10 C out! I am pleased to report that aside from a bit of missing fur; BOOTS was saved! The hawk realized how serious I was after connecting with my trusty broom and he scattered quick! Happy Sabbath to you all! Hope this made someone smile. Members phkrause Posted December 5, 2009 Members Posted December 5, 2009 Thanks for the little story and very glad that boots survived. Also good to have you on the CA forum, hope your experience here will be enjoyable. And also have a Happy Sabbath Overaged. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
GreatLakesGramma Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 Did Boots learn not to get out of his cage after that? My sister and I used to raise rabbits. We sold them to people who ate them, and for pets. We especially sold a lot at Easter time. But we never ate them. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. Dr. Shane Posted December 6, 2009 Posted December 6, 2009 A traditional Easter dinner really should be cooked rabbit. I don't know who ever thought up the Easter ham. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity

Dr. Shane Posted December 6, 2009 Posted December 6, 2009 No. I am talking about character. We look in the mirror to see our character defects. Well, God gave me a help-mate. I don't have to look in the mirror to see my character defects. My wife lists them off to me on a regular basis. She is such a blessing. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor...
