EDMONTON — Sunday marked the coldest Dec. 13 in Edmonton’s history.

Environment Canada recorded a frigid -46.1 C, or -58.4 C with wind chill, at the Edmonton International Airport at 5 a.m., Environment Canada meteorologist Pierre Lessard said.

The old record of -36.1 C was set last year, he said.

“To break a temperature by 10 degrees is very exceptional,” said Lessard.

A ridge of frigid Arctic air has hit all the prairie provinces this weekend, causing record-low temperatures in many parts of northern Alberta, Lessard said.

AND YET so close to the Athabaska Tar sands... so where is this global warming now??

Indeed! I'm kinda sweltering here today: 30.5C, 45% humidity.

But it won't kill me... whereas -46 will, if you're in it for any length of time.

(and I know you're just prodding, but global warming produces extreme weather... and breaking the record by 10 degrees is pretty extreme!)

Not that I go over board one way or the other about global warming, you make a valid point Bravus. Shawn Boonstra from It Is Written in one of his series' should how true that is.

-40 is where Celsius and Fahrenheit cross. -46C is -51F. The windchill matters for people outside and working in the weather but doesn't impact the cost of heating a building unless the building isn't built tight and allows for wind penetration. The wind chill doesn't impact the engine in the car either. The wind chill factor basically is designed to help people figure out what type of clothing to wear when going outside.

The coldest temperature I can remember of being in is -30F or -34C although it was a -60F wind chill.

I don't think this reflects well on those that blame global warming for everything. When we have an active hurricane cycle they blame global warming. A cold summer - global warming. A rainy season - global warming. A cold winter - global warming. I think one almost has to first operate on the assumption that global warming is true to blame everything on global warming. I see this as just another dot on the chart. Over a period of years we can look at all the dots to see of there is a trend.

It is cloudy here in South Texas where I am and is 75F or 24C. It is a nice day.

Good point, Shane. What I was trying to say was that cold does not *disprove* global warming, not that it proves it. You're quite right that it's the longer term patterns (climate) that establish the trend, not the short term weather, which is always going to be variable.

Sometimes, in fact most of the time humour does not transfer well.

My bit about "where is global warming now" was a dry humour that did not take. As was my comment about Tiger Wood.

I got that you were having a dig, and chuckled... but then was kinda compelled to argue the point anyway... It's a sickness, but hopefully I'm recovering.

When politics and religion aren't safe to discuss, the weather is most often the out. My mother use to say in moments of verbal jousting; "Let's talk about candy."

I'm for that. Is there any kind of candy a good Christian can eat that is politically correct? LOL I'm laughing at this now, just in case this is offtopicthatsfunny

Hope ya'll have a happy day.

Blessings! peace
