LifeHiscost Posted December 21, 2009 Posted December 21, 2009 ____anyone who knows anyone of "older years" who took up a musical instrument, other than guitar, and became proficient enough to be recognized by a larger audience than just church or family and friends. Joy! Quote Lift Jesus up!!
Moderators Gerr Posted December 21, 2009 Moderators Posted December 21, 2009 It would be nice to know. I'm trying to decide whether taking up piano lessons is worthwhile for me at this stage in my life. Quote
Woody Posted December 21, 2009 Posted December 21, 2009 Yes. I have considered learning the Marimbas for years. Just haven't yet. Since I can play the piano ... I figured it shouldn't be that hard to transition to. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Members phkrause Posted December 21, 2009 Members Posted December 21, 2009 Interesting thought LHC, I can't think of or know anyone that has done that. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted December 21, 2009 Members Posted December 21, 2009 I know a lady who just graduated from college with a major in music and she's 60 yrs old. Her specialty is the piano and organ. Her mother played both instruments, but Cheryl didn't. She's now in demand for accompaniments for various recitals and for churches. She makes a decent living doing that. Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony. Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?
Moderators Gerr Posted December 21, 2009 Moderators Posted December 21, 2009 I think the world class Russian pianist named Richter did not take up piano until later in life rather than in his childhood. How late I don't know. Certainly not in his 40s or 60s. Quote

Sounds like a winning example on which to base a decision. I've just started some schooling OL and was wondering if the odds were reasonable for those who have declined, somewhat, in the memory department. I've heard exercising the mind keeps one young. And if the goal is to become proficient enough to reap some rewards more than just personal, it seems even more worthwhile. I would say yes,Gerry, go for it. And Redwood, the discipline to act daily on the desire is an important part of my own experience. Hope you find the opportunity to step out in confidence. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.”" James 4:13-16 NKJV Joy! Quote Lift Jesus up!!
Liz Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 I don't think anyone should let a number keep them from doing anything, learning music, going back to school for a degree or just a class in something to enhance your life. GreatLakesGramma Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 When I inherited my father in law's piano, I sold my old one to a man in his late 60s who was just starting to learn to play. He said that every year he chooses something new to learn. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. Members phkrause Posted December 23, 2009 Members Posted December 23, 2009 Good point Liz. This might be a little off topic. But a while back in the AR, or VL, or TT, they had an article in there about a woman that was, I believe in her 60s, and in real bad shape. She started walking and by the time she was in her eighty's she was walking up mountains and was in great health. So as Liz mentioned, you can start anything, not just music. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2

GreatLakesGramma Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 She lived to be 101 years old. She climbed Mount Whitney 23 times. They even named one peak on Mount Whitney after her. Moderators Jeannieb43 Posted December 23, 2009 Moderators Posted December 23, 2009 During the 1960s the NBC TV outlet in Los Angeles did a feature news report on Hulda Crooks. They even sent a camera crew with her as she climbed Mt. Whitney. It was shown on TV but I can't recall the exact date. Hulda was the widow of a Dr. Crooks who taught pathology in the medical school [which was called College of Medical Evangelists then, now called Loma Linda University]. He was the pathology teacher of my parents in med school in the '40s. Quote Jeannie

...Change is inevitable; growth is optional....
