Sacked for sharing her faith...

I would not want him to offer prayer to Shiva for my child. But I would appreciate the kindness behind the offer.

I would politely refuse, ask him why he arrived at his worldview and share mine... :-)

If he prayed to Shiva would it have harmed your child? Maybe after accepting a sincere genuine concern/prayer for your child it would be opportune to share your your "worldview" and thank him for his genuine concern.

Do you believe that blessed rosary hurt my son or praying to Mary for interceding on his behalf?

Everything you do is based on the choices you make. It's not your parents, your past relationships, your job, the economy, the weather, an argument, or your age that is to blame. You and only you are responsible for every decision and choice you make, period ... ... Wish more people would realize this.

As Shiva is a false god, why would I want him to pray for my child?

The Catholic instance is different.

The nurse was in her own mind practicising Christianity, so yes I would have accepted that.

Your thoughts?

I believe the reverence of Mary and the belief she can intercede is false as well.

Said nothing about you wanting someone to pray for your child.

Would I inform someone at that specific time they were praying to a false god? No,I would take it in the spirit and sincerity offered while joining them in a prayer to the true God.

No, the catholic situation is not different. Praying to Mary is a similar act as praying to Shiva, neither exists with the power to do anything.

Praying to Mary and praying to Shiva is not all that different for those that don't believe in either.

I woould be willing to accept the prayers of CAtholics for my son as well as other Christians with whom I had theological differences. The reason for that is that as a Christian I believe inthe power of God and that there are others who are also followeres of the God that I worship who do not worshilp with me on Saturday.

If a Hindu informed me that heshe had asked a Hindu god to heal my son, I waould thank that person.

However, I would see an offer to pray to Shiva in my home, in the presence of my son in a different light--more like a dedication to Siva or more like a religious service. I would decline that in a manear that attempted to keep a relation with the Hindu.

The point of the news item is that the non-Christian was deeply offended by the request of the Chrisian to pray. That offer was made in the context of the provision of education to her child. The mother had every right to complain even if you and I would not have done so.

I didn't take the question as if a Hindu would be carrying around the idol of Shiva. More as a Catholic may ask to pray and then proceed to pray to Mary.

Bonnie:

Understand. It is just that from my knowledge of HIndu "theology" I would believe that the Hindu would be intending to incarnate the god Krishna into the bedroom of my home and asking for his direct intervention into the life of my child.

I woudl be uncomfortable with that.

As I would. Someone bringing a statue of Mary and praying to her would also make me really uncomfortable.

But I am eternally grateful to the catholic nurse that did "petition" Mary on my babies behalf. She did so with complete confidence that Mary had lost her own son and as a mother would intervene.

I think that God heard over and around the "petition" to Mary.

Knowing what they know now about the importance of holding and touching preemie babies she was light years ahead of her time.

Between her dedication to my baby and her absolute belief,(as wrong as I believe that is) that Mary would intervene I credit her more than anyone for his survival

I may be in the minority but if there is any truth to God meets you where you are at,he knew the heart and intent of a very dedicated nurse.

My baby was touch and go for over two months. She never faltered in her belief that Mary would intervene on his behalf.

Even if I had not believed in prayer no one could have missed her resolute faith, wrong tho it was.

I could not share the firm faith in Mary that the nurse obviously had,but I could appreciate her care and concern. Can't imagine reporting her

Back to the original post. It may not have been the most PC thing in this day and age but can't fathom why someone would be so bothered by something they did not believe in and report the teacher.

While the teacher should have known that was a no-no it seems a little harsh.

It is not always easy to know the best thing to do or say under various circumstances but if our mind is stayed upon the Giver of all good things, we are most apt to do that which will honor and glorify God. Your thoughtful answer reveals an attention to the still small voice and will bring its' sure gift from God for all involved, especially when your appreciation is made known to the one who offered the prayer.

When our second son was born he was given little chance of survival. I have always believed he lived because of a very dedicated and loving nurse. She was a devout catholic. She would come on duty a half hour before her shift and hold him and rub "her very special rosary" across his back as she rocked and prayed for him. She spent her breaks with him and time after her shift ended. Her "special rosary" had a blessing by the pope. She prayed to the "holy mother" that had lost her son

The rosary of course did nothing as the prayers to Mary, but no one will convince me God did not hear her in spite of the rosary and her sincerity that my baby live.

None will be held outside the kingdom as a result of practicing

poor theology unknowingly. The Law of God written on the heart is a Law of Love which produces results leading people to salvation despite our lack, and when it is time to take the next step toward the Redeemer, that also will be made clear.
