Kindle and Adventist Publishing

Recommended Posts

More Kindle books were sold from Amazon.com then regular books. They are electronic books that are downloaded in seconds to your kindle machine.

Question is this, what should Adventist Publishing do with? Would you buy your SS quarterly online? What about other books? What is this caused your ABC to close?

If you receive benefit to being here please help out with expenses.

I sure hope Kindle doesn't destroy the print publishing industry. I can't afford a Kindle, and probably wouldn't want one even if I could. I don't even really like reading books on my laptop, and it's a lot larger than a Kindle.

Besides, most of the books I read are borrowed from the library. I can't picture the day ever coming when the library would be loaning Kindles instead of printed books. Not our rural library especially. They have enough trouble getting voters to approve enough millage for them just to stay open.

We purchased a Kindle for my daughter this Christmas. She absolutely loves it. At only 99 cents per book, the Kindle has already begun paying for itself. I looked over her book shelves this past summer when she was at a journalism convention and estimated the value of the books we've purchased over the years to be somewhere in the neighborhood of $5,000. If we had a Kindle all those years ago, it would have likely cost us approximately $300 for the texts.

Libraries are great too, of course! Without the library, we'dve had to have spent well over $50,000 in books over the years.

Yes, the Kindle is the way for us now!

I do hope that Adventist publishers will begin to make all their books available on Kindle. The savings in space alone will be worth it in our house. And think of the trees we'll save in all those quarterlies.

An added benefit my husband reminded me of: the books we purchase for Kindle are readable on the iTouch he uses as well.

Aubrey, I'm glad your daughter likes her Kindle. For me, though, there's nothing like holding a book and turning the pages. And there's something about a book that makes it special. Of course, that's also because I collect old antiquarian books and can't imagine being without a book.

If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony.

Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?

(Secretly, I agree. I'm glad she likes it though because she reads more than anyone I've ever met--she's saving me a bundle!)

Not the one we bought her. It is only black and white (as far as I can tell--not like I've had my hands on it for any great length of time). It does have a "read-aloud" feature though and will keep her place if she takes a break from reading. Also, it can access certain websites and is able to access her e-mail account.

I think our publishing houses should offer all forms of media. Anything to keep our youth interested. If they want to listen to something on an ipod or iphone/blackberry etc. Or read on Kindle or other downloadable device, they should be able too.

I love books. But I also like to listen to books on CD in the car while I travel. If I were doing a lot of flying I would love a Kindle.

I think Kindles or similar devices are our future. They may not replace paper books but they may well replace (and save) the newspaper industry. Kindles even read to you so they are like an audio-book. I didn't know our printing industry wasn't into this already. Yes, we need to get on board - like yesterday already.

For starters, we could transfer the Bible, in different versions on to it, then we could transfer Ellen White's books, then all those other books and Adventist magazines that come out every week/month. I personally am reading, Semnele Timpului, not sure if there is a similar magazine to it in English but the translation would be, The Signs of Time. (I think there might be but I am not sure.) It has my attention a lot. I wish they made one every week because I finish it in maximun 2 days and I re-read it as well.

The Kindle is just one companie's entry into the e book reader market. Sony has a book reader as well.

There's a lot of sda book material that is in e book format of one sort or another. I know from experience that you can cut/paste certain articles in certain magazines and put this on a e book reading program. I used to be able to read certain AR articles on a blackberry phone. It can be done.

Amazon books sells a lot of adventist books. They were doing this before the kindle came along. They also sell a lot of books that are critical of the sda church. I don't think Amazon cares one way or another. All they want to do is sell books.

The same holds true for the kindle. If certain adventist books are selling, more than likely they will be in kindle format.

I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs.

According to the Kindle faq page, supported files include .mobi and .prc. A lot of the popular EG White ebooks can be downloaded in those formats here and thus read on the Kindle. I think it can also read microsoft .doc files and pdf files but it sounds like you have to email them to yourself and then read them on the kindle's email thing. Not sure if it would have the full features of the amazon books.

I'd love to get one someday. Mostly because of what Aubrey said about saving space.

If your daughter or anyone would like an e-book copy of Steps TO Christ in modern English (called Joy in Jesus) email loudcry.2007@gmail.com

and receive one free by return e-mail.

I don't have a kindle, but would be interested to know how e-books that are not sold by Amazon do on the kindle when they are sent as attachments in emails.

The English speaking world does not know how blessed we are. All of EGW's writings are available on line in English. But almost none of her writings are available online in other languages. And the non-English speaking people will probably never have the access that we have.

So a kindle and like devices might be helpful to the non-English speakers if they can get current in print books electronically. And who can say, but accessing non-English electronic versions of EGW's writings might help the EGW Estate to get the complete writings of EGW in many other languages?
