Any Thoughts on this kids ...

Quote:
I received a copy of the September 2008 Messenger (** entitled 'What your kids could have done on their summer vacation) and left it unread on my coffee table. A friend came over, picked it up and said, "See, you're no different than thesecular world; you use the same language we do." I asked them what they meant, and they pointed to the word 'kids' on the cover.

I was surprised to see the word 'kids' used not only on the cover but throughout the magazine. This may seem like a trivial matter, but it can, I believe, also denote some of the problems we have with today's youth.

My question is: why do we have to use these words to describe our children? For one, it does not differentiate between boys and girls and is, more or less, putting everyone into the same category. As a result, gay and lesbian lifestyle is unfortunately being presented as a normal way of life, and, if we are not careful, our words will subtly portray us as condoning this lifestyle. I believe children are becoming more and more confused regarding their sexuality. , and can understand why. What is so wrong with calling them 'children'? It is used extensively throughout the Bible, and, to me, denotes the sanctity and respect we should be giving to both genders.

I believe the Bible always should be our guide in expressing our thoughts or ideas. As you know, throughout the book of Genesis, God called us 'man' and 'woman', 'son' and 'daugher', 'child', and 'children', etc. If God used these words to describe His creation, why would we find it necessary to do otherwise? I would think that the Adventist Church would be in the forefront in making doubly sure we avoid using worldly or popular words or phrases and, in so doing,m uphold the sanctity and respect God gave to each of His creations. - Audrey H.

REDWOOD

I WOULD use the words children and kids interchangeably

until about 6 or 7 years ago

I was talking to 1 of my coworkers at the time and

ask the question about her children I used the word kids

I wanted to know how many she had

she answered me by saying she had 14 which took my

breath away for a moment I said you have 14 children

she looked and my and laughed she told me that she

raises goats and she was thinking about her goats when

I said kids

from that point on I have always said the word children

dgrimm60

That's funny dgrimm. But I know that if I were working in the Big Apple and I mentioned or said kids no one would think anything other than children. Some even say that about there animals if they don't have children of there own. But I agree we are very lazy here in this country and everything has to have a quick fraze or nick name.

I don't see anything wrong with saying "kids" when referring to "children"... My pastor says we're "God's kids" all the time, and sometimes even during prayer.

I think everyone knows it refers to a child or children.....unless you're out on a farm and have goats.

If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony.

Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?

I think the quoted author is all wet. "Children" doesn't designate gender any more than "kids" does. Using "children" isn't going to do anything to reduce gender confusion.

Neither does using "kids" have anything to do with presenting the gay and lesbian lifestyle as normal. It's totally and completely irrelevant.

Nobody's going to parent any differently just because they use one word or the other either.

Oh, and one more thing. My kids don't like me referring to them as "my children" now that they are all adults.

Next time introduce them as "fruit of my loins" LOL. They may like "children better.

That's what I was thinking...

Maybe this person's real worry is that children will confuse themselves with goats?

At the risk of offense, perhaps the argument could be classified under "straining at a gnat and swallowing a camel."

"“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence."

And it gets worse. As the parents get older, they may confuse the children as goats. Especially when they jump up on the car. That's the kids, not the parents. reyes

It's not safe for a kid to jump up on a car around me. Especially if it's my car.

I don't think either one is safe. And anyone up to say age 25, is still a kid in my book.
