Outta Here Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Why are you learning it, SivartM? Just for fun, or do you plan to use it often? Quote
SivartM Posted January 13, 2010 Author Posted January 13, 2010 Mostly for fun right now, but if I get good at it I'll probably use it for taking notes, and maybe set up an auto-text-replacer program to replace "l" with "the", etc. Using only the 10 most common words in Speedwords is supposed to speed up your writing by 25%. GreatLakesGramma Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 Using only the 10 most common words in Speedwords is supposed to speed up your writing by 25%. Except that if your writing is for the purpose of communicating with others, whatever time you do spend writing is still wasted, if you're using Speedwords, unless you're communicating with someone who shares your interest in it. Outta Here Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 I think it's really pretty cool! Do you know any other languages? Quote
SivartM Posted January 14, 2010 Author Posted January 14, 2010 English. I'm taking Spanish (this is my second year, actually) but am having too much trouble with all the verbs and such to quite "get it". So I really only know English right now. I've been interested in Esperanto for a while, though (another cool international auxiliary language). After Spanish I'll probably try to learn that. I really should have learned it before, because it's a lot easier than "real" languages, and studies show that learning Esperanto as a second language helps you learn other languages more easily. I like languages. :D Quote "Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much." - Oscar WildeDo to others whatever you would like them to do to you. Outta Here Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 Ah, Esperanto! I remember first hearing about Esperanto while I was in high school. My German teacher told us it might be the "wave of the future" and we'd all do well to learn it as soon everyone in Europe would be speaking it. That was over 20 years ago. I think people like their own "native" languages too much to give them up for a new, universal language. Coincidentally, I'm learning Spanish this year too! I homeschool my son, but he's also taking a Spanish course at the homeschool academy. His teacher is from Puerto Rico, so we're learning that dialect. It's been a lot of fun. There is a "teacher" on YouTube who's posted a number of videos that we've learned a lot from. You might want to check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIwFPNfUoik Quote

I like languages. IMO, Spanish is the easiest of the foreign languages to learn. It is logical, and it follows its own rules. I can't see any reason for exhausting my brainpower on Speedwords; I'd rather do my note-taking in Gregg shorthand -- at least it'd be legible to any other shorthand student if the occasion ever arose when my notes needed to be deciphered by someone other than myself. And Esperanto had a heyday a couple decades back; no country apparently liked it well enough to adopt its use. But Sivart, you're exercising your brain cells!! --Good prevention for senility. :-) Quote Jeannie

...Change is inevitable; growth is optional....
SivartM Posted January 14, 2010 Author Posted January 14, 2010 Lol! That's the drawback... but the nice thing is that Esperanto has a good community, so you can travel pretty much anywhere in the world and stay with Esperantists. English probably has a better chance of taking over the world, but oh well, it's fun anyway. Neat! I'm homeschooled too. What grade is your son in? Thanks for the YouTube link. The videos should really help. Do you know any other languages? Quote "Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much." - Oscar WildeDo to others whatever you would like them to do to you. Outta Here Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 SivartM, that's pretty neat about the Esperantists traveling together. I hadn't heard of that group before. My son is in 8th grade--he's only just begun learning the Spanish, but already has absorbed a lot. I'm impressed with his learning, actually. I've only taken a little bit of Spanish, but I do have 4 years of German studies behind me. Enough only to understand what I'm reading and maybe speak a little to get by if needed. I hope to learn more Spanish as the years progress. Good luck in your studies! (What "grade" are you in now?) Quote
SivartM Posted January 14, 2010 Author Posted January 14, 2010 That's good! It sounds like he'll be doing very well. He'll be far ahead of me, then. I'm in 12th grade. I'm going to miss homeschooling. Neat! I think German would be a neat language to know... but I think it's supposed to be rather difficult also, isn't it? GreatLakesGramma Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 Someone told me that once I learned French, German would be easy. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. "To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you." -- C. S. Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted January 14, 2010 Members Posted January 14, 2010 I disagree with that. Once you know one of the romance languages, i.e., French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, then it is relatively easy to learn another romance language. German is not a romance language. It's an entirely different style of speaking and writing... it would be easy to learn Dutch or English if you spoke German, though, because of their similarities and the germanic nature of the languages.. Outta Here Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 SivartM, I don't think you'll miss homeschooling as much as you think. In all reality, we ALL homeschool throughout our lives--some are more adept at learning on their own than others. Seems to me that with your drive for learning, you'll be "home" schooling for the rest of your life--even if you do go on to college/university. I agree with rudywoofs about the differences in the languages. Learning Spanish first won't help a whole lot with learning German. I think it does help a little though--because you do have to grasp the idea behind genders and verb tenses. English, of course incorporates some of this, but learning a language from birth is more intuitive than scholastic. Quote
GreatLakesGramma Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 What the person meant is that German is easier to learn than French. I always thought it was really hard. But it's closer to English than French is, so maybe it isn't. Aubrey, I didn't get homeschooled growing up, but I have never stopped learning. So I guess I've been homeschooling myself for years, according to your definition. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. SivartM Posted January 14, 2010 Author Posted January 14, 2010 Good point. English is a lot different than Spanish and German, so it's not really helpful anyway. English doesn't assign random genders to water, paper, and banana peels, for one thing. I have a question for all the multilingual people here... do you ever mix up languages when you're using them? I'm still trying to figure it out. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
