Moving beyond the simple basic steps of:

A) Recognising our spiritual poverty.

Recoginising the beauty and gifts of the merits of Christ.

C) Receiving the gift of the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

We see here a simple statement of how we battle "sin".

Exodus 14:14

The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.

Temptation comes to our mind.

It tries to reach our heart and find a reaction.

We look to Jesus, we "hold our peace".

And we claim the promise that "He will fight for me".

Then the Lord steps in and deals with the temptation.

When Jesus said "Abide in me and I in you".

He was pointing out the first part was "our part".

We are to "abide in Christ", to dwell on Him and His presence with us, His life and character, His word.

We are to abide in the fact that we have been "crucified in Him", that we are now dead.

Then it is His responsibility to manifest Himself in us.

He does this in many ways (fruit bearing).

One of the specific ways He does this, is when He overcomes temptation for us.

We co-operate by turning to Him.

We step aside, look to Him and let Him deal with the temptation.

He then delivers the victory.

It works, and it is simple.

Just a little aside here, Mark. I am an A.A. Milne fan, and, having ardently studied "Winnie The Pooh," I immediately recogonized that you misspelled "recoginising" above. Tigger would absolutely not approve of this.

We are to "abide in Christ", to dwell on Him and His presence with us, His life and character, His word.

We are to abide in the fact that we have been "crucified in Him", that we are now dead.

Then it is His responsibility to manifest Himself in us.

He does this in many ways (fruit bearing).

One of the specific ways He does this, is when He overcomes temptation for us.

We co-operate by turning to Him.

We step aside, look to Him and let Him deal with the temptation.

Yes, I agree. He has promised and HE WILL DO IT.

He met the enemy at every step with "It is written." He used the word of God to thwart the temptations of the evil one. This is where our safety lies. We should study the word of God, and be so filled with it, that we can meet the enemy of our souls with "It is written," as did our example. Then we could hope for the grace that God has promised, to enable us to be overcomers. You should be full of hope in the work of the Lord. A discouraged man cannot glorify God. Whatever you do, you should not lose your hope and faith. When you become discouraged it is an evidence that you have allowed the enemy to come in between your soul and God. You must lay hold of the hope set before you, and you will come off victorious, and be ready to sing the praises of God.

An interesting point:

When one is by nature a person who is rash and too quick to react, the Holy Spirit will temper that.

If a person is too meek to speak when confronted, the Holy Spirit will give her/him courage and wisdom to speak up when necessary.

We should pray and plead with the Holy Spirit until this truth is written in our hearts and minds.

It is the Holy Spirit who will do that for us.

We must learn, if we want victory, that God fights and we "abide"...

THIS is some interesting thoughts

We can understand this from the sanctuary dgrimm.

When a man approached the tabernacle in the wilderness, it was initially with a sense of his sin. (The "A" of the gospel - our spiritual poverty and sense of it).

Then he must sacrifice a lamb, he must avail himelf of the sacrifice of Jesus and take that blood and enter into the Holy Place. (The "B" of the gospel - our acceptance of the merits of Christ).

Then He enters into the Holy Place. Here he receives the bread (table of shewbread - the Word of God). The gift of "prayer" (the table of incense). The concious illumination of the Holy Spirit (the candlesticks). All of this deals with the "mind" the gateway of the soul.

But he does not stop there, he then enters into the experience of the Most Holy Place. The experience of the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit in his heart, the law written on the heart and union and communion with God - personal union and communion with a personal presence of God. (This is the "C" of the gospel).

The ultimate experience is the Most Holy Place experience this is where God is leading us all to.

Now, it was the Holy Spirit who first called us to come to the tabernacle in the first place, so even in that, all we ever did was respond.

This is all we ever do, we respond to the call of the Gospel and are drawn.

We just have to keep submitting to that drawing.

And as long as we do not resist and maintain our reliance on God, we are drawn into that deep spiritual experience.

Here is the scripture for this question dgrimm. :-)

2Ti 1:14 That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.

It is by the Holy Spirit that dwells in us that we keep those things given to us.

As the "abiding in Christ" experience is something that is given through our "understanding" first, it then becomes something that the Holy Spirit maintains in us.
