He's a mountain climber! Mountain climbers climb mountains because the mountains are there! He was trying to climb the lava cone inside the crater when he fell off and down the slope.

If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony.

Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?

I say ... if he hiked in ... let him hike out.

No reason for the military to get involved. IMHO

If he's injured, you want him to climb the crater slope and down the mountain by himself? The military got involved because they have the equipment for rescue in the weather conditions the mountain is under right now.

More than likely as he was trying to look in and down, maybe the ground gave a little and his balance was leaning a little to far and couldn't stop himself and slipped in and down. I for one hope he is OK.

The last I heard, they know he's alive, because he's blowing his emergency whistle. You sound like you want him dead.

On FoxNews there still saying that he might be alive but there not sure. They are saying that right now there is no response from him. Still there is a 50-50. I will be praying.

On a serious note, I do hope he is o.k. and gets out safely.

Fox reports that he fell 1500 feet yesterday while posing for a picture. There is no indication he is now alive.

from The Oregonian

Quote:
MOUNT St. HELENS -- A rescue helicopter from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island has resumed searching the mouth of the dormant volcano where a 52-year-old Kelso man fell Monday, after a morning flight stymied by heavy cloud cover.

More coverage

The Oregonian's full coverage of the missing hiker on Mt. St. Helens. Dense fog and rain shrouded Mount St. Helens this morning, stalling efforts to rescue experienced mountaineer Joseph Bohlig, said David Cox, undersheriff for Skamania County.

“We’re just going to have to wait for good enough weather, there’s no other way to get him off that wall right now,” said Cox.

Rough weather prevented a ground search for Bohlig, who was posing for a summit photograph above the caldera shortly after noon Monday. Warm from the rigorous four-hour ascent when his frequent climbing partner Scott Salkovics, Bohlig shed his jacket and pack before turning his back to the crater and stepping onto a cornice of snow that collapsed beneath him, said Sheriff Dave Brown.

"He took quite a tumble," said Brown. Bohlig fell more than 1,000 feet down a 70-degree, exposed slope into the caldera of Mount St. Helens.

KGW-TV reports that Salkovics watched in horror before quickly tossing a pack to Bohlig: "'Boom, it busted off and I saw him clawing for the edge with a startled look on his face. And then he disappeared,' recalled Scott Salkovics, his voice cracking with emotion."

Salkovics, a veteran Army rescue pilot, dropped supplies into the hole, according to KGW: "an avalanche beacon, a jacket, food and water."

Dangerous downdrafts and unstable rocks stymied rescue attempts Monday. A medic reached the crater floor, but had to abandon efforts to find Bohlig because the high winds were dislodging rocks, creating a dangerous situation.

Cox discounted early reports that searchers heard Bohlig blow a whistle.

“With the type of winds that were blowing up there last night and being 1,500 feet away, it’s pretty impossible to hear anything,” he said.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter from Astoria spotted Bohlig, who was not moving, inside the caldera.

"We're holding out that he's still alive," Cox said this morning before a 10 a.m. press conference. "This remains a search and rescue effort."
