Members abelisle Posted February 17, 2010 Members Posted February 17, 2010 Check this out: http://www.lanhamact.us/ Sounds a little harsh to me even though I can understand our copyright/trademark ownership of our official denominational name. Wonder what kind of message this will send out to the less informed in that neck of the woods? Members phkrause Posted February 17, 2010 Members Posted February 17, 2010 Well that was interesting. Like to see the whole story around this, and not just the spin of the article. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Obviously these people want to use whatever name recognition SDA's have. If all they want to do is identify their beliefs, they could use "Second Advent Sabbath Church or something like that. This is piggybacking on a known name. It is wrong. Quote
SivartM Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 How is this different from the other various groups that are called "Seventh-day Adventist" but aren't? I don't see why we needed to trademark our name in the first place. Most people haven't heard of Seventh-day Adventists anyway, so it's not like most people would even have a chance to be confused. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets." - Jesus

I think the main problem is wackos giving the actual SDA church a black eye. I'm sure that innocuous churches borrowing the name are not a problem, but when people start making it look like our church is weirder than it really is, it comes to the attention of the GC and they do something about it. I think more people have heard of Seventh-day Adventists than you might think. I also think it was important that the name of the denomination be trademarked so fringe elements couldn't (or shouldn't) use it and portray the church in a bad light. Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony. Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?
Outta Here Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 I think the SDA church needs to change it's name to something less generic if they want to have copyright laws protecting it. To me, "Seventh-day" means that the group worships on the seventh day; "Adventist" means that the group is looking forward to the second advent of Christ. The SDA church should change it's name to something else if they want to be unique. Quote

Outta Here Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 Church of God is also a descriptive title. It needs to be something more unique. The words church, seventh-day, God, advent(ist), christian, sabbath, et al, are adjectives. A name is not an adjective. Quote
Members phkrause Posted February 17, 2010 Members Posted February 17, 2010 Sivart there have been a number of others that have taken the name and have been stripped of it. So this is not the first time it has happen. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Moderators Nan Posted February 17, 2010 Moderators Posted February 17, 2010 A few years ago a group of Adventists, led unfortunately by a well known Australian who claimed to be in the more pure group of SDAs, decided they would copyright the name Seventh-day Adventists in the small Pacific nation of Vanuatu. They then tried to prevent the original church from using the name. It took quite some legal effort to resolve. Just a cautionary tale. Quote

What's funny is if they want the name so bad, why not join! But actually they were probably adventists to begin with and than felt there way was better. Sad, this in my way of thinking could be part of that shaking, but maybe a little to early just yet? But you never know. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
nuff sed Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 The church has taken the position that it has because of the litigious climate in which we live in order to protect itself from lawsuits by persons who do not know Adventists from Jehovah's Witnesses or Mormons. If anybody and his uncle could use the name "Seventh-day Adventist" to identify themselves we would have a lawsuit every time we turned around whether it was "our fault" or not. In this day and age it is absolutely essential to be legally identified and give legal recognition to those who are actually part of us. 'nuff sed Quote

Outta Here Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Still just a descriptive title. Doesn't matter anyway. No one's gonna change the name of Seventh-day Adventism. It's just my opinion. Quote
