I guess on the age thing you have a couple of options:

1. Assume the archaeologists got the date wrong

2. Assume perhaps the world is a little older than 6000 years (since that number never appears in the Bible)

This age is according to Irish archbishop Ussher, who calculated it by adding up the years listed in Genesis. The fatal flaw in that calculation is that many generations were omitted in Genesis. So the age of the Earth probably is 10 - 15 thousand years. This does no harm to our theology, unless we believe the Bible is inerrant, and remember we claim that we do not believe that. I would be willing to believe the Earth is around 23,000 years old, or will be that old at the time of the second coming.

In addition archbishp Ussher used current translations of the masseritic text, some of the ages are hard to read and thus hard to translate. The Palistainan textual familly, or the Bible Jesus used, has the world about 9000 years old (it was about 7,000 around the time of Christ, and it was based on this text and the approaching of the world being 7,000 years that the Rabbis started to compaire the 7000 years to the 7 days of creation and was expecting the 7000th year to be a sabbatical and the Messiac age. When nothing happened except for Jesus coming at that time, the Jews turned to the Babylonian textual family from which we get our Masseritic text which put the 7th thousand year a couple of thousand years in the future. And Chirstians did not -- at least officially and Biblically-- use the 7000 years as a proof text for Jesus, so it fell by the way side until now that we are getting close to the 7000 years in the Masseritic texts.) And the Egyptian text, from which we get the Septutiant and the Bible that Paul used, has the age of the earth from a little over 7,000 years to over 10,000 years now.

So we have the problem of the different textual families and differences in trying to read the ancient text where we get the world from approxamately 6,000 to approxamately 10000 or 11000.

Then you have to add to this the information that Old Salor pointed out that ancient geneologies, including comparing geneology to geneology in the Bible you find skipped generations.

A third issue is that some of the geneologies are biological others are by some other connection. So when it says that someone begat someone else it can mean that they are that person's father, or that person's grandfather, or you can grow a couple of greats inthere. They basically mean that the one person was an ansester to the other. We don't know just how many generations back. And they can also be a list of some other connection, like a list of Presidents of the United Sates would read George Washington begat John Adams, John Adams begat Thomas Jefferson. Thomas Jefferson begat Abraham Linclon, Abraham Linclon begat Teddy and Franklyn Roosevelt. Franklyn Roosevelt begat John Kennedy, John Kennedy begat George Bush, George Bush begat Obama. Now try to figure out the age of the United States from a list like this.
