SivartM Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 Okay, I have some questions that hopefully someone else can answer since our church is noncombatant: I have to register for the Selective Service when I turn 18 this August. I'm a conscientious objector. What am I supposed to do? If I don't register, I can't get federal financial aid for school, right? And I kind of need that. So, is anyone experienced in such a situation? I tried searching but all I could really find was "just don't register because they won't prosecute you"... but I want financial aid. Woody Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 I honestly don't know the answer. My 'guess' is that it is fine to register. You can always indicate you are a conscientious objector as far as I know. There are people here who would know much more than I. Try Gregory Matthews. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
SivartM Posted March 4, 2010 Author Posted March 4, 2010 But what if there is a draft later? You can never tell... Woody Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 Check out 'Ask a Chaplain' and the Military Thread. You could ask Gregory your question there. He might show up better in that forum ... I don't know. SivartM Posted March 4, 2010 Author Posted March 4, 2010 As usual, I didn't think to check the Selective Service website until after I created this thread. http://www.sss.gov/FSconsobj.htm Apparently, I can register, but if they call the draft I can appeal to be a conscientious objector and they'll put me in the Alternative Service. Woody Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 Cool. I suspected it was something like that. Great. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.

See Sivart all that worry about nothing. Yes everybody needs to register, nothing to be concerned about. If they do bring the draft back you will still be able to be a conscientious objector. And if you are concerned about going into the military, don't be! It will be a very good experience. I enjoyed my two years. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
GreatLakesGramma Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 Just because you had a good experience doesn't mean everyone does. My dad was punished for not drinking alcohol at the base Christmas party. He was too young, according to the laws at that time, but his superior told him that now that he was in the air force, civilian laws no longer applied. He was to do as he was told, including drinking alcohol. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. Life basically forced me into the military, and I definetely see the Lord's leading. Quote

SivartM Posted March 4, 2010 Author Posted March 4, 2010 Well, I'm a pacifist, so... I don't think I would enjoy it. Thanks, everyone. :D Quote "Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much." - Oscar WildeDo to others whatever you would like them to do to you. Moderators Kevin H Posted March 4, 2010 Moderators Posted March 4, 2010 I consider myself a pacifist and see my job in health care as a way for living up to my pacifisism in wanting to help people no matter what their background is and to help those who are stuck in the horrors of war. Quote
Members phkrause Posted March 4, 2010 Members Posted March 4, 2010 Well, I'm a pacifist, so... I don't think I would enjoy it. Thanks, everyone. You'll never know Sivart. I would probably have not joined the military had I not been drafted. But I did get drafted, during the Vietnam Conflict. Could have easily been sent there and maybe I wouldn't think that I had a great experience, but I asked the Lord to be with me and where ever I went I would go knowing that he would be there with me. I went in as a medic and I'm glad I had those 2 years, they were a great experience. So never say "I don't think I would enjoy it". Besides there is no draft right now, and I don't think they'll have one for a while. pk pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. GreatLakesGramma Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 I doubt they'll ever bring back the draft. I've read that it takes a lot more time and expense to train soldiers in today's combat techniques and weapons. They don't want to waste all that time and money training people who aren't going to stick around long term. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26.
