David and Bathsheba

A discussion came up last Sabbath at our afternoon meeting about David and Bathsheba. After relating the story the narrator asked for comments as to what led up to David's commiting those terrible wrongs. Some brought out that he should have been with his men in battle. Others mentioned sexual addiction ala Tiger Woods, etc. One even questioned why a beautiful woman (any woman) would be bathing, where she could be seen. Anyway the whole incident certainly resulted in grevious sins, problems, and troubles for all concerned.

This is just a quick related thought as I am on my way out. David was in constant communication with God, always consulting God before each battle. Thus, God blessed David and gave him success in battle. The one thing that He failed to seek God's cousel on resulted in sin. David lost his focus. He knew that his actions were sin. This is apparent when he is confronted by the prophet. However, David did not recognize himself as the man of sin until Nathan called him on it, "You are that man!"

From this, one could conclude that it was a lack of communication with God (prayer) that led to David's compunded sins. To avoid sin, we each need to talk to, and listen to, God. When we focus on ourselves or the thing in front of us, we lose our proper focus resulting in lost communication, followed by self-determination, and ending in sin.

That's my two cents! Good question.

I have also heard the comment that David should have been with his troops, that there is grave danger when one is at ease. When faced with obvious danger, we all tend to stay close and call on the name of the Lord as with David in battle. When the danger passes, there is a tendency to relax one's guard. Therefore the repeated warning: Watch! Because no one is safe except in the arms of Jesus.

To be seen....

David was overtaken by his nature...so much that he had Bathsheba's husband killed. This illustrates the power of human nature where it is placed in a powerful position. In fact outside God's spirit with the same circumstances and life experiences as Hitler we would do the same things.....

A woman's power, given over to her nature, is in her looks and sexuality.

It was thus that the children of Seth were seduced from their integrity, and the holy seed became corrupt. It was thus that Joseph was tempted. Thus Samson betrayed his strength, the defense of Israel, into the hands of the Philistines. Here David stumbled. And Solomon, the wisest of kings, who had thrice been called the beloved of his God, became a slave of passion, and sacrificed his integrity to the same bewitching power.
