What is happening to 'some' of the young people these days?

Yesterday I went to my doctor. There's a small waiting room and it is often filled. As usual it filled. I was standing and in came a very elderly couple. One gentleman got up and offered his seat. But the old man was still left standing. I felt bad for him.

It just so happened that there was a young woman in her early 20s I would say. She was sitting in a couch type seat that was designed for two people. But she had her legs up and she was stretched out taking BOTH seats. She didn't budge.

It started out being quite commical because a lot of people were opening discussing her and the state of young people these days. More people came in and eventually there were three of us standing. But no one mentioned anything to the gal except to indirectly discuss her. I've never seen anything like it. Eventually there opened up more seats. I got in to see my doctor but wondered what happened with that young woman. I didn't see any evidence of the people hanging her when I came back out. :)

Good question Woody. There basically is no respect for your elders anymore. Years ago when driving people even used to use hand signals along with there using there blinkers. Now maybe 3 out 10 drivers even bother to blink as to where they are going to turn. Its amazing how rude people have become.

Heh, but discussions of the corruption of the youth go back at least as far as Socrates... and quite probably to Adam and Eve despairing of Cain and Abel!

The indicating one is a pet hate of mine, but I think it's carelessness (which I guess is a form of selfishness when it involves others' safety) along with the horrifying extent to which people tend to be phoning, texting, eating or whatever while driving these days. But I think the solution is more police in cars and on bikes policing this stuff, instead of the easy revenue raising of radar speed cameras... Anyway, kinda off topic.

Maybe the young lady needed someone to speak to her politely but firmly. Clearly she had not been 'brought up right', but it's never too late, IMO.

(Or, here's a thought, it's just possible she was at the surgery for a medical issue that meant she needed to have her feet up, or had been assaulted and abused and couldn't stand to have someone close to her, or... I admit the selfishness assumption is much more probable, but it's still an assumption.)

Good points Bravus.

Yes Bravus. Good points. There was no evidence of any surgery. But you are SO right that one of us needed to approach her and ask if she could move her feet. I guess we were all chicken.

That's what I'd assume if I was there. I'm the one who, whenever my parents complain about a person driving insanely, "What if they need to get to the hospital?" (To which they usually reply, "The hospital is in the other direction.")

The kids with mohawks who ride skateboards down the escalator and swear at elderly people, however, have no excuse. So on their behalf, I'm sorry. :(

It was the receptionist's responsibility to ask the young lady to move her feet.

I often witness the exact opposite: it is the elderly who are the most rude and inconsiderate in my experience. Their language is foul, their manners are lewd, their opinions racist and sexist, and their "assuming" attitude outrageous.

How many doctors are there to see so many people with some standing, Woody? And how long did you have to wait before you were finally seen by your doctor? There is no excuse for a packed room like that unless: 1) they over-booked, 2) inadequate facility.

I myself hate to wait when I go for my appointments, so I instructed my staff to never over-book when I was in solo practice. Less than 15 minutes was the average wait. A 30 min wait was rare. If I had an emergency call to the hospital, we just re-scheduled the patients unless they chose to wait for me. That would be the only occasion for a wait longer than 30 min. I don't recall my waiting room with 12 chairs ever being full. It was different when I was in group practice where we had a large waiting room with over 30 chairs, but we had four docs.

I typically wait 30-45 min. for this particular doctor. I think this last time it was towards the 45 min. mark. But as to your 1.) and 2.) ... it is both.

I have another doctor that is so notorious for being late that I have tried to call ahead of time to see if he is on time. But the phone number is for an office of his in a different town and the staff refuse to give me the number for my town and they refuse to call him for me. So ... you can't win.

Perhaps part of this problem is 'culture'. This doctor that has the inadaquate waiting room is an Iranian who lived and trained in Iran. I suspect he is used to crowded conditions there. :)

You know, these youngsters, selfish, fresh, rude - - I must apologize. Since I have sold my car, I have to rely on bus, streetcar and subway. Well, white hair, well, a little handicapped with a damaged knee.

As long as I was isolated in my car, I had to rely on the bad telltales. I apologize : Now having encounters with them they offer me their seat - - They are poite and caring - - -
