Newly is gone

I had to give up Newly to the Bernese Dog Rescue Team yesterday. This might not seem like very much news to anyone, but it is to me. I lost my best friend. And I dont have very many friends.

Newly was too strong for me, weighing in at 120 lbs - just as much as me. He was lovable and friendly, but he wouldn't obey outside or pay attention to his name.

If any of ;you have a chance, please say a prayer for me and one for Newly. He's going to be lost, too, in his new home.

Thats all. All I want to do is sleep now.

Oh, Pam, how sad. . .

I had to give up an Aussie a couple of years ago, and know how it feels to lose a dog that you've come to love. I'll pray for you, and maybe, sometime later, you will find a dog that fits better. The times in my life without a dog, I had an empty spot in my heart.

Aw, I'm sorry, rudywoofs. :(

I'll pray for you and Newly.

Thanks guys. I found out that Newly has his new home with a childless couple in their early 40's. They live out on one acre that is all fenced, so he can roam wherever he wants. And he can come inside whenever he wants. He also has the quacky quack mallard duck that I had gotten for him. I guess it was love at first sight...he went right up to them and hugged their legs.

I miss him a lot though, but 120 lbs is just too much for me to try and train! I did my best, but I failed. They expect Newly to reach about 130 lbs by the time he is full grown.

Thanks for caring, pk, Dottie, and SievertM...it helps a lot. I miss him a lot.

p.s. I got a nasty email from the original owners saying I was lying about how active Newly was. They told me if he was that bad, I should just put him down. That was an awful thing to say.

I'm glad Newly is happy in his new home. I'm sure Newly was very happy while he lived with you, though. :) I hope that someday you can find the canine companion who is just right (and the right size) for you.

Urgh, that's an awful thing for his former owners to say. Even if you couldn't keep Newly, I'm glad you're a much better owner than them.

I'm sorry Pam, that you lost your best friend. Also sorry for the treatment you received from his former owners. Their positions sounds a bit suspect to me. I hope you can find a dog that will be better for you.

Just saw this Pam, those breeders sound to have little common sense but I am glad Newly is happy.

Some of the smaller dogs have lots of character. I have a 'nephew' called Shadow who is a Portugeuse water dog (he is much older than the Presidential pooch) and he is a wonderful friend for his owners. Hope you can find one eventually which is manageable.

Thinking of you.

Yeah, very sorry to hear about this, Pam.

In terms of getting another dog-companion at some stage, it might be worth thinking about a mellow older dog: pretty much all puppies, even the little ones, are likely to be rambunctious for a while. You don't want a rescue dog that's been mistreated or anything, but an older (and smaller but not tiny) dog whose owners have had to move away and give him up or something like that might be an option.

Anyway, all the best in whatever you decide.

They sound like a real pain in the xyz kind of people. Sorry you had to deal with them at all. And definitely glad that Newly didn't have to go back to them.

Also glad that Newly has people that will love him like you did.

Thanks everybody.

Yes, I'm thinking of getting an older dog. I'm on the list for rescued golden retrievers, with the stipulation that they must be housebroken, and on the mellow, laid-back side of things and be properly trained.

If I could find someone who's needing to give away a good dog, that would do it. There's a place in Portland where they have dogs that were being trained as seeing eye dogs, but for some reason, didn't make the final test. I know they want to put them with good families (I think I qualify), but the cost is way to prohibitive. The only reason I had gotten Newly was because he was given to me for free.

Well, at least my back yard got fertilized for 10 weeks.

LOL, not sure that you want that kind of fertilizer. :)

offtopic Just dawned on me that my nephew Aaron and his wife are living in the Portland area. He's going to cooking school there, not sure what the name of the school is.

The the Cordon Bleu school...that's where most of the people go..spendy though and not good first time out of the kitchen prospects. The school gives you a big hype about the culinary industry, but doesn't tell you it takes years to get anywhere.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to let him know that. Its a good thing that he's on FB, so I can get him the info right away. Or maybe I won't say anything. He needs to live and learn. He'll be fine. :)

If you can locate a training facility for dogs for the blind you may be able to get an older dog.

A friend of mine is blind and had a beautiful seeing eye dog. I wasn't aware of it but she says these dogs in time will burn out so at a certain point they look for exceptional families to adopt the dog before they bring the new one home. No charge.

The dog she placed was fabulous

"Failed"...What do you mean by "Failed"?

Did the dog die? Since you are still posting, I will assume that you didn't die. Were you unable to take care of a large dog with a large need?..."Failed"....What do you mean, "Failed"?

1] You recognised a need...The dog needed a larger playing area.

2] You recognized another need- You overestimated your ability to provide for the needs of your dog.

3] You recognized another need- that of giving your dog a good home...

"Failed"?!?!? I should say not! You recognized some needs and sacrificed your desire for his happiness...That not a failure...that's noble....

I agree with both Bonnie and Neil, you did the right thing for you and Newly; and a retired seeing eye dog would be great. I have met two seeing eye dogs that were on the verge of retirement, one was a Black Lab and the other a German Shepherd, both were extremely well mannered. They were going to make some awesome pets, and they both had lots of years still left.
