SivartM Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 I looked up "grace" in the dictionary and apparently it comes from Greek mythology. Grace was one of three sisters who were the givers of beauty and charm. So, when we're singing "Amazing Grace"... who are we talking about? karl Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 The girl's name Grace \g-ra-ce\ is pronounced grayce. It is of Latin origin, and its meaning is "favor; blessing". A virtue name referring to God's grace. Greek mythology: the Three Graces were goddesses of nature: Aglaia (brillance), Thalia (flowering), and Euphrosyne (joy). [Middle English, from Old French, from Latin grtia, from grtus, pleasing; see gwer-2 in Indo-European roots.] The word "grace" occurs 20 times in the NKJV OT, usually in the sense of "favor." The first usage is: "But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord" (Gen 6:8). Quote
Administrators Tom Wetmore Posted April 21, 2010 Administrators Posted April 21, 2010 I'm thinking that since grace is of pagan origin, we should avoid it at all costs... Quote "Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good." "Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal." "I love God only as much as the person I love the least." *Forgiveness is always good news. And that is the gospel truth. (And finally, the ideas expressed above are solely my person views and not that of any organization with which I am associated.)

Dr. Rich Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 karl, good question! Here is another: Where is grace in the ten virgin prophecy? Hmmm? Quote
SivartM Posted April 21, 2010 Author Posted April 21, 2010 Um... the ten virgins got invited to the wedding? Of course this would turn into a debate. I need to learn not to post anything that's funny but not quite funny enough for the humor section. Nice job working a Paul slam into the thread, though, Dr. Rich. I was speculating on how you would do that the moment I saw that you had posted. Dr. Rich Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 Your welcome! I had an aunt Grace but I thought she got her name because she was anything but graceful. (As for the question, I have asked this many times and have yet to have anyone answer it.) Quote
SivartM Posted April 22, 2010 Author Posted April 22, 2010 Wow, I was the first to answer? Cool. Or not cool. For the other people. But anyway... Guest Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 karl, good question! Here is another: Where is grace in the ten virgin prophecy? Hmmm? It is by the grace of God that any of them wake up in time. And like Siv said, it is by the grace of God that they were invited. There's no way around that. He didn't have to invite them, or any of us. God doesn't owe anybody salvation. How is it that you always manage to overlook the obvious? Quote
Christopher Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 1“At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2Five of them were foolish and five were wise. 3The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. 4The wise, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. 5The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. 6“At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ 7“Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’ 9“‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’ 10“But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. 11“Later the others also came. ‘Sir! Sir!’ they said. ‘Open the door for us!’ 12“But he replied, ‘I tell you the truth, I don’t know you.’ 13“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour. Thats NIV so were is the invitation? They all have the oil or grace :) Quote JOHN 17:3 and 4
