Nancy Pelosi has gone on record as saying that she has talked to Catholic leaders about immigration reform and has asked them to speak from the pulpit in favor of passing amnesty for illegal aliens because it “is a manifestation of our living the gospels.”

"I would hope that there’s one thing that we can do working together as we go forward that speaks to what the Bible tells us about the dignity and worth of every person — and that is on the subject of immigration,” Pelosi said in her remarks. “Because I think the Church is going to have to play a very major role in how we, in how people are treated.”

Whatever happened to the separation of church and state? And, does she think that the Catholic church should be quiet in their opposition to gay marriage? If so, it shows that the “separation of church and state” only applies when liberals want it to.

Nancy Pelosi is not a good Catholic but I don't see any violation of church and state. She is just talking to church leaders. She is not passing legislation which imposes the government's will on the church.

I think Ms. Congressperson misspoke. She meant to point out what Bible says about the dignity and worth of every wanted, born person. A government official, asking for certain policies to be propounded from the pulpit, may not be efectively an "establishment of religion". but it certainly does cross the line a lot more than merely putting a Nativity scene on public land during the holidays season - which the ACLU rants about every opportunity it gets.

I can imagine the outcry that would have come forth had any Repub speaker of the House had come to certain churches, and in a high profile manner asked them to preach from the pulpit about the necessity of helping to overturn Roe vs. Wade via legislation and appointments, or of promoting the marriage definition amendment.

Churches are allowed to take positions on political issues but not on political candidates. So a church can preach against abortion or gay marriage but cannot tell their members which specific candidates to vote for without losing their tax exempt status. Freedom of speech allows them to endorse candidates, the IRS doesn't. No I think Nancy Peloci can ask them to preach on certain issues but not to endorse specific candidates.
