bonnie Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Lawmaker: Obama to Send 1,200 Troops to Border May 25 03:02 PM US/Eastern By JACQUES BILLEAUD Associated Press Writer PHOENIX (AP) - The Obama administration plans to announce Tuesday that it will send as many as 1,200 National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border to improve border security, an Arizona congresswoman said. Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords also said in a statement released Tuesday that President Barack Obama will request $500 million in funding for border security. Part of Giffords' district borders Mexico. Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer's spokesman said the governor hadn't been told of the move prior to her office being contacted by The Associated Press and had no immediate comment. In 2006, President George W. Bush sent thousands of troops to the border to perform support duties that tie up immigration agents. The troops wouldn't perform significant law enforcement duties. That program has since ended, and politicians in border states have called for troops to be sent there to curb human and drug smuggling and prevent Mexico's drug violence from spilling over into the United States. ___ Associated Press writer Paul Davenport contributed to this report. The governors of MN have more than once called in the guard when there was serious and widespread damage due to tornado's. They weren't fooling around or for show. Dr. Shane Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 Quote: In 2006, President George W. Bush sent thousands of troops to the border to perform support duties that tie up immigration agents. The troops wouldn't perform significant law enforcement duties. This is very important. We do not want soldiers doing police work on the front line. We do not want to militarize our border. Having soldiers do support work frees more Border Patrol agents to do the law enforcement. However this is just a quick fix and not a long-term solution. We need to increase the size of our Border Patrol. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity

bonnie Posted May 27, 2010 Author Posted May 27, 2010 Interesting to see the gun. Dr. Shane Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 Perhaps, but one is going to go out and pick tomatoes and cabbage. The other is going to steal your car. Now cities only have a limited number of police. Should those police be protecting our cars and homes of rounding up undocumented tomato-pickers? Somehow I would feel safer if President Obama increased the Border Patrol so the local police could respond to my burglar alarm or a 911 call when they need to. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... During harvest season we have a lot going out to pick cabbage and tomatoes by day and steal your car by night. Allow all illegals to illegally enter the country so that the police can determine which of them has already stolen your car, or your work tools,or your job,or has totaled your car while driving illegally and without insurance. Why not give the same treatment to Pakistani immigrants. Perhaps one is going to work at a convience store. The other is going to shoot a group of Jews. Shouldn't the limited number of police be protecting (responding to the 911 call)our citizens against (an unlimited number of) criminals instead of rounding up the 7/11 workers? Quote

I don't know the statistical numbers of legal vs illegal but in our area the domestic assaults, gas siphoning, petty theft etc increase dramatically. The area's where they live looks like a ghetto. Indeed. And when we go to the ghetto we find the same kind of petty crimes. But we are changing the subject here. The discussion is about using city, county and state police departments to enforce immigration law or to use federal Border Patrol law enforcement. Of course the state and local police need to enforce the law in regards to petty crimes. Wherever we find poverty in the western world, we find petty crime. Local and state law enforcement prioritize on how they best serve the community in their enforcement of local and state laws. If we add the enforcement of federal immigration laws to their duties, we stretch them thinner and thus place our local communities at greater risk. One fact the extreme right wing must accept. Migrant workers are not going away. America needs them. If and when we get our immigration system fixed we will still have migrant workers. The difference is that they will all have papers. They will enter the country legally on work visas. The poor will still steal cars and siphon gas. That is the reality of having poor people in society. Migrant workers move from place to place wherever they can find work. In that way, they are different from the poor in the ghettos. That is not going to change. Rather than whining and complaining about the people that feed us, just put an alarm on the car, put on a locked gas cap. Then sit back and enjoy that watermelon. Enjoy those onions and tomatoes. Enjoy the sugar made from sugar beets. A migrant worker put those on our tables. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity
Dr. Shane Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 Very noble, Shane. Allow all illegals to illegally enter the country so that the police can determine which of them has already stolen your car... I have never stated we should allow undocumented workers to enter the country illegally. Quite to the contrary! I have stated we need to increase Border Patrol officers and give them the needed equipment so they can enforce the law at the border. The local and state police shouldn't have to deal with the issue if we have enough Border Patrol agents to do so. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor...
