Jerome "Jerry" Wendland

MAY 30, 2010

BELLVILLE: Jerome "Jerry" Wendland, age 61, of Bellville, passed away Wednesday evening, May 26, 2010 in his home after a courageous battle with metastasized cancer. Jerry was surrounded by his family when his journey came to an end.

His road began at birth on October 24, 1948 in Cleveland. Shortly after birth, Jerry moved to the Richland County area, where he was a lifelong resident.

Jerry was graduated from Malabar High School in 1966 and began his self-determined path into adulthood.

During high school, Jerry met his life-long partner, Rebecca "Becky" DeVore, whom he married February 4, 1967.

Tuned with a strong work ethic, Jerry joined the work force very young, working at several small jobs during school. He began at Mansfield Tire and Rubber where he worked as a statistician. The course he was following changed when the plant closed. Sure to make his way, Jerry began working from his home as a day trader. This change in career paths afforded Jerry more time with his family, and time to spend doing the things in life he loved the best.

Jerry enjoyed maintaining his property. He kept his property at a level comparable to that of Kingwood Center. Jerry was truly blessed with a green thumb.

A true angler, Jerry knew how to use the hook and line. He loved fishing so much he devoted two acres of his rural Bellville land to building his very own fishing pond. His love for rod and reel was shared and passed on to his four young grandsons.

To keep his travels more interesting, and fun, Jerry owned a Harley Davidson, a 1200 CC Sportster "dripping with chrome". He was a member of HOG, Harley Owners Group, where Jerry and his wife attended meetings and club activities.

He was also a member of NRA, and was very gifted with the knack for electronics.

He will be remembered for his strength, determination, and a legacy of "do it yourself values".

Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Becky Wendland of Bellville; their son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Stephanie Wendland of Mansfield; four young grandsons, with whom he loved spending his time, Bricen, Brenton, Blake, and Brevin; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Molly and Bob Roy of Butler, and Suzanne and Mark Krams of Tennessee; a brother and sister-in-law, Steve and Denise Wendland of New Jersey; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Dick Wendland (2010); mother, Jean Snyder (2006); and son, Todd Wendland (1994).

Calling hours will be held Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at 5 p.m. in the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1040 West Cook Road, Mansfield. A memorial service will follow. The Pastor Edward Marton will officiate.

The Bellville Snyder Funeral Home is grateful to assist the Wendland family with funeral arrangements.

Flowers will be received at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 1040 West Cook Road, Mansfield. Memorial contributions to MedCentral Home Health and Hospice may be made at the church, or through the funeral home.
