Stan Posted June 2, 2010 Posted June 2, 2010 June 2010 Signs of the Times Email Newsletter The Signs of the Times newsletter is a collection of stories and quotes from past issues of Signs and These Times. *************************** A story is told about a pendulum that counted the number of times it would have to swing in a year. The number was so great that it seemed discouraging. So the pendulum said it was no use trying, and stopped at once. It stopped until reminded that it had to swing only once in a second, and a second was given it in which to swing. This illustrates the Christian experience of many. They look ahead, think of all the temptations, trials, afflictions, and disappointments which they will meet. The obstacles seem so many and the pathway so strewn with hardships, that they decide it is no use trying; they cannot overcome all these. So they give up in discouragement, surrender to the devil and quit trying. Many have done this. How foolish! The Lord promises that as your days are so shall your strength be. (Deuteronomy 33:25.) You do not have to live a month or a year at a time, but only a day at a time—By George B. Thompson, Signs of the Times, March 20, 1923. Quote: “I have read in Plato and Cicero sayings that are very wise and beautiful; but I never read in either of them, ‘Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.’”—By St. Augustine, Signs of the Times, March 13, 1923. *************************** Don't miss the July 2010 issue of Signs of the Times: “Five Ways to Get Along with Your Teenager,” “Angels, What the Bible Says About Them,” “Is God’s Law Still Important?” “Does God Care What We Eat?” and other important articles. About midway across the ocean, one restless bird escaped from his cage. In an ecstasy of freedom he flew away from the ship, out across the water. They watched him until he disappeared in the blue of the sky and said, “That bird is lost.” But after a few hours, to their surprise, they saw the bird, on heavy wing, coming toward the ship. Panting and breathless, the little feathered prodigal dropped upon the deck. How eagerly that bird, out over the water, had sought the ship again. That ship was not a prison. It was a home. And it was the only way across. And so, like that little bird, we batter and bruise ourselves trying to get away from God. And then we find that He is the only way across. Every excursion into the far country of false freedom brings us back to this: “Make me a captive, Lord, and then I shall be free.”—By George Vandeman, These Times, February 1974. Quote: “Faith is the daring of the soul to go farther than it can see.”—By William Newton Clarke, These Times, October 1972. *************************** NEW from Pacific Press— Seven Keys: Unlocking the Secrets of Revelation by Jon Paulien. Fat enough to make seven bars of soap. “2. Iron enough for a medium-sized nail. “3. Sugar enough to fill a shaker. “4. Lime enough to whitewash a chicken coop. “5. Phosphorus enough to make 2,200 match tips. “6. Magnesium enough to make a dose of magnesium. “7. Potassium enough to explode a toy cannon. “8. Sulfur enough to rid one of a dose of fleas.” It is further estimated that these ingredients, not including the water, which is not listed, would be worth about 98 cents. (This was written in 1926.) Very good; indeed, excellent, as an illustration of how much of the real problem of man is capable of analysis and appraisal by the scientist, the materialist, who has little or no place in his thinking for anything that cannot be measured in a test tube or weighed in a scale. About 98 cents worth of the problem of man can be solved with all the technical equipment that our modern laboratories know. Yet man is worth so much that the greatest price was paid for his ransom from the control of sin, the price of the life of our Saviour Jesus Christ. Science is good as far as it goes. We have no conflict with it so long as it does not arrogantly declare that it can measure and appraise all the mysteries of life. Science is like the skilled mechanic who, though he can accurately measure the dimensions and explain the mechanical aspects of an organ, knows nothing of the heavenly melodies that can pour from its soul under the inspired touch of the organist.—Anonymous, Signs of the Times, December 7, 1926. Quote: “How easily and contentedly we speak of Jesus Christ as our example! Do we realize what it means? If we did, it would revolutionize our life. Do we begin to pray as He did? Think of what it meant for Him to take a basin and towel like a slave, and wash the disciples’ feet! Do we stoop to serve? Can anyone say of us, as was said of Him, that we go about ‘doing good’? Think of His words, servants of His, ‘I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.’”—By Maltbie Davenport Babcock, Signs of the Times, July 20, 1926. *************************** Place this in your church bulletin or newsletter: Introduce a friend or neighbor to Jesus by sending Signs of the Times to their home. The lad was silent a minute; then he said, “Boys, you know my father died a short time ago. This coat I am wearing, my mother made from one of dad’s. When I put it on the first time, she said, ‘Jack, this coat has always covered a heart that was manly, honorable, and true. Promise me, my son, that you will always strive to be as honorable and true as your father was before you.’ Now, boys, I promised, and it is therefore impossible for me to go with you.” That settled the question, and Jack was left alone. He was arrayed in a cloak of righteousness; therefore he could not sin!—By Arnold V. Wallenkampf, These Times, September 1959. Quote: “I have often been kept from speaking and acting by a sight of my own unworthiness. But now I see the more unworthy I am, the more fit am I to work for Jesus, because He will get much more glory in working through such mean instruments, and the more He has forgiven me the more I ought to love and serve Him.”—By George Whitefield, These Times, September 1972. *************************** Four NEW Signs of the Times Specials—Truth Matters!!! When Jesus comes, how will He look to you? What will He be like? How have you imagined Him? What do you expect of Him? When Jesus was upon earth, many people saw Him, many were associated closely with Him in ministry, or in criticism. But what will He be to those who never saw Him in person—who believed in Him and hoped in His promises? What of the faithful ones who lived and died before the birth of Christ, or after His ascension? Adam will see the Giver of the Garden. Noah will see the Master of the Storm. Abraham will see the Keeper of Covenants. Job will see the Wisdom of the Ages. Joseph will see the Giver of Dreams. David will see the Chief Musician. Miriam and Moses will see the Rock of the Wilderness. Ruth will see Naomi’s God. Esther will see the Defender of her people. Daniel will see the Fulfillment of all Prophecy. Paul will see the Giver of Crowns. “Thine eyes shall see the King in His beauty.” Will you see the Rewarder of the Faithful?—By Hazel Hartwell Simon, Signs of the Times, February 17, 1953. *************************** Read articles from past issues of Signs of the Times at: http://www.SignsTimes.com *************************** William Moulton Marston, psychologist and educator, asked two thousand persons this question: “What have you to live for?” He was shocked to find that 94 percent were simply enduring the present while they waited for the future. They waited for “something” to happen. They waited for children to grow up and to leave home. They waited for next year. Others waited for another time to undertake a long-dreamed-about project. Still others waited for someone to die. All waited for tomorrow, without realizing that all anyone ever has is today—yesterday is gone, and tomorrow never comes.—By Walter Raymond Beach, These Times, January 1965. Quote: “I believe that the Bible is to be understood and received in the plain and obvious meaning of its passages; since I cannot persuade myself that a book intended for the instruction and conversion of the whole world, should cover its true meaning in such mystery and doubt, that none but critics and philosophers can discover it.”—By Daniel Webster, These times, Special Issue 1974. *************************** Compiled by Dale Galusha. Great illustration of a great truth. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
