Interesting...

First, why should the government use the Bible for political guidance? First amendment... first amendment...

Secondly, I don't see how Obama was ridiculing the Bible. I think his point was, whose school of interpretation are we going to follow? The school that says that we should still stone aberrant children? The school that says that turning the other cheek is too impractical (which I guess Obama and many conservatives belong to)? If the Bible becomes government policy, we have to have a committee to decide what it means, and after years of arguing about it, all they'd come up with was an interpretation designed to fit everything the government already wanted to do. Which likely would not fit many people's interpretations, and would be pretty much useless.

Oh, and most Americans don't know anything about the Bible. It's a fact. Our president knows more than the person who made this video, apparently, since that person doesn't think that the Sermon on the Mount is radical.

I agree with SM. I don't see the now President as mocking the Bible. He's just repeating the same mantra that has been used by our Religious Liberty Department to demonize the religious right. Have we forgotten so soon? What he's doing is being disingenious. The left has no problem using the Bible when addressing such "moral" issues as the death penalty,abortion, social justice,ect... I'll betcha you can find Pres. Obama has quoted or paraphrased it often in his public speeches.Using the straw man approach to the proper use of the Bible is not mocking the Bible it's mocking those who differ with our political application of biblical principles.I think the commentary on the clip indicates a different agenda.

Yes, this was clearly a jab at those of us who want to use the Bible as our guide. "The Bible can't help us with the complex problems we're facing" was his message. Far better would it have been for him to exalt the principles of the Bible (upon which all legitimate government and law is based) without digging up a negative connotation in the Bible with which to ridicule a segment of the population. This was just dumb on his part, but he's playing to his base.

President Obama was right on target in the speech. Religious liberty is secure with him in the White House. The fact is many liberals here at Club Adventist did in fact make the argument that the US should have turned the other cheek after 9/11. In fact, they believe that President Bush's faith was superficial because he didn't turn the other cheek. I am glad the President Obama disagrees with such liberals.
