I give up... what's a party line?

I think it has something to do with the story the Communists were telling of their plans for the world's future at the time of their greatest power. You know, the Communist party line.

I used to have a crank phone. We would crank (wind-up) the phone which alerted someone in the post office that we wanted to place a call. After she got finished selling stamps ... she would put our call in. That just would not fly with the youth of today.

They would probably get 'cranky'.

Back in those days you could tell, to some degree, who was eavesdropping by how many people were on your party line. Now there are so many people on the line it's impossible to know who is on the line.

Somehow I managed to realize I should keep quiet while listening though.

As well as lifting the eavesdropper's speaker very slow and quietly so it wouldn't click and warn the conversationalists that someone else was joining the conversation.

Yes. I do recall lifting up the phone receiver very carefully off those two tiny buttons ... if you recall what I mean. I'm not sure how much difference it made. But I tried.
