bonnie Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 Only a few days late WASHINGTON (AP) -- The United States is accepting help from 12 countries and international organizations in dealing with the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The State Department said in a statement Tuesday that the U.S. is working out the particulars of the help that's been accepted. The identities of all 12 countries and international organizations were not immediately announced. One country was cited in the State Department statement -- Japan, which is providing two high-speed skimmers and fire containment boom. More than 30 countries and international organizations have offered to help with the spill. The State Department hasn't indicated why some offers have been accepted and others have not. Yes it is.It was not thoughtful when Obama turned down help from at least 13 countries in the beginning. I would think if payment is required it would come from BP. "While there is no need right now that the U.S. cannot meet, the U.S. Coast Guard is assessing these offers of assistance to see if there will be something which we will need in the near future,"...IOWs, the US can do it with the resources that it has, and if these other countries come, we could have too many people trying to do the same things and have some other ship damage... If we actually remember, Obama asked BP if they had a handle on this and they said they didn't need any help. But having said that I do agree with Bonnie that we should have gotten in there as soon as it was obvious that BP didn't know what they were doing. But maybe they were some other reasons. Not sure what that would be. I have to admit that we were slow but I think we did the best we could do under the circumstances. It was the US government that declined,not BP.They said no to four large skimmers.The skimmers can collect 5,000 tons per day. The Dutch have rapid response systems for oil spills The dutch offered within the firstthree days and they were told NO.Not by BP but by the EPA The governors were also stopped from taking action that would protect their shores and wetlands.Finally they did get permission and then ran into more legal snags.
