Moderators Jeannieb43 Posted July 20, 2010 Moderators Posted July 20, 2010 To prepare a short sermon requires three times as much preparation as to prepare a long one. Being ruthless in rereading, revising, and practicing it aloud is the only way to make sure you'll have a powerful sermon -- one in which the congregation has to listen to each sentence or they'll miss something. [i hate hearing a preacher say, "I'm going to say that again!" and then he repeats himself. Doesn't he think we listened the first time?? Pretty soon, I find my mind wandering, because there's no challenge there.] Quote Jeannie

...Change is inevitable; growth is optional....

Woody Posted July 20, 2010 Author Posted July 20, 2010 Okay. I will say that I liked this part: "If you don't strike oil in 30 minutes, stop boring." Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.

Moderators Gerr Posted July 20, 2010 Moderators Posted July 20, 2010 Excellent, Woody!!! We share our pastor with another church, so there's plenty of opportunity for the elders to preach. I've had my share. I try to stay within that 30 minutes. Anything said after 12 works like a sleeping pill. Quote
aldona Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 No, no, no! You've all got it wrong! Don't you realise that a long sermon is a sign of holiness (for both the speaker and the audience)? The longer the sermon, the closer you are to the Second Coming of Jesus when it's done! Why, when I was young, we had to walk 3 miles barefoot in the snow to get to church (and it was uphill both ways). And we didn't have any of those newfangled sissy padded things on the pews. No sir, just hard, hand-carved timber, with strategically placed cracks and splinters to keep us awake. And we would be happy and grateful as we sat through the five-hour sermon, because we were so glad just to have a sermon to sit through. Then after lunch we would come back, and beg the speaker to keep going for another 5 hours. Ah, those were the days...You just don't see that kind of commitment in folks any more. How are we supposed to endure the trial and tribulations of the end times if we can't endure a few hours of sermon time? (OK, removing tongue from cheek now. But yes, I have heard all of these arguments raised in all seriousness when the topic of long sermons has been raised in Adventist circles.) Of course!!! That's the modern version of sanctification by self-flagellation! Quote: Why, when I was young, we had to walk 3 miles barefoot in the snow to get to church (and it was uphill both ways). Can't quite figure out HOW you can go UPHILL to church, then reverse direction to go home and still going uphill? Quote: And we didn't have any of those newfangled sissy padded things on the pews. Administrators Tom Wetmore Posted July 21, 2010 Administrators Posted July 21, 2010 ...Of course!!! That's the modern version of sanctification by self-flagellation!... I must stop speed reading, especially after picking up on the confusion caused by the title... At a rapid glance I read the last word above as "flatulation"... Quote "Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good." "Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal." "I love God only as much as the person I love the least." *Forgiveness is always good news.
