Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted August 5, 2010 Moderators Posted August 5, 2010 The year is 1956 and the Plebe Class at the U. S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland was undergoing their orientation cruse in a USS Macon in route to Europe and Scandinavia. As the ship steamed north the urgent voice of one of the Naval Academy students broke the silence: “Bridge. This is Starboard Lookout. There has been an atomic explosion off the Starboard side.” There was a brief moment of silence until the Bridge replied: “Starboard Lookout. This is the Bridge Please note that you have reported the moon which is rising on the Starboard side.” Taken from: Groom, Robert W. “Take Cover.” MILITARY OFFICER, August 2010, page 84. Quote Gregory
