Woody Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 Do you remember 'afterglows'? Do they still exist? (I haven't heard of one since my college days at PUC.) Are they the same if they still exist or have they been modified to a more 'hip' version? I used to be very blessed by them. I actually haven't given them any thought for about 35 years. But here you go ... please tell me what has happened to them. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Liz Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 I've never heard of "afterglows", but if you elaborate on what they were, perhaps they are just called something else now? Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted August 5, 2010 Members Posted August 5, 2010 WWC didn't have "afterglow" ... we had something else called "evensong".. Probably the same type of thing. They still have it at WWC.. Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony. Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?
Woody Posted August 5, 2010 Author Posted August 5, 2010 I've never heard of "afterglows", but if you elaborate on what they were, perhaps they are just called something else now? It's praise singing and prayer time 'after' the meeting is finished. Usually in a circle with guitars. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Liz Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 What meeting are you refering to? When I was growing up, we would have singing time before Prayer Meeting and either before or after Vespers. They no longer do vespers, and we don't go to the midweek service, so I don't know what they do then. Quote For what will a man be profited, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his soul? Woody Posted August 5, 2010 Author Posted August 5, 2010 I mostly remember it for vespers. You mean they've done away with vespers AND afterglow? Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Liz Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 We have been attending our church for the past six years, and they have never had Vespers. The church we went to in Ft. Worth did have Vespers, but we only got to attend that church for about six months and then we moved to where we are at now. I would like to think that they still do it. So I guess it depends on the church, or rather the people. Quote For what will a man be profited, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his soul? Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted August 5, 2010 Members Posted August 5, 2010 My church has vespers, and then usually a Saturday evening secular program. We don't have Wednesday Prayer Meetings, though. Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted August 6, 2010 Members Posted August 6, 2010 I remember when we use to have auctions for Investment. Members would bring in things they made or otherwise owned, and we would have an auction. It was fun. That was back in the '60's when we didn't have so many members, and everyone knew everyone else. Administrators Gail Posted August 6, 2010 Administrators Posted August 6, 2010 Auctions still work as a fundraiser, too. Our academy had one this year and raised about $30,000. They made it a black tie affair and had some high ticket items. Vespers? I love vespers, but the church we are attending doesn't do them. :( Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Moderators lazarus Posted August 6, 2010 Moderators Posted August 6, 2010 My church has Wednesday Prayer Meetings but not Saturday night hooplas. Yes churches still have them. We've had them after church service on a Sabbath. We had them to good effect after Friday and Saturday nights during an evangelistic series. People just don't want to go home. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence. Einstein
