doug yowell Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 Oh, and while we're on it, yes, in the sense that homosexuality is not the norm - the orientation with the majority of the population - then in that technical sense it is 'deviant'. But in that sense, so is left-handedness. We don't deny rights to left-handed people on that basis... The last time I checked being left-handed wasn't historically considered a moral sickness. But what if left- handed people demanded the right to be called right-handed so no one could call them deviant anymore? Quote

Polygamy has never been redefined. Polygamy is multiple legal MARRIAGES. It has always involved opposite sex spouses. doug yowell Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 Well boo hoo hoo. As if gays are the only ones that get this kind of treatment. I have gotten the exact same treatment for not wearing the right clothes! I think you might have received better treatment if you wouldn't have worn those orange bell bottoms with that pink tank top! LOL; you don't know how far you are from the truth...there was a time when I was the first one in the town to wear "bell bottoms" (green-psychedelic), and a purple silk shirt with 6-button cuffs and big plumes above the cuffs...I was attacked by a mob once for this; they had stones and clubs! Only one stone caught me between the shoulder blades as I was running... Actually; now that I think of it, they were STOVEPIPE PANTS. That was really abberant dress back then; especially when I wore those snakeskin platform shoes with 6 inch heels...I had to go all the way to Toronto for those clothes...absolutely no one appreciated my efforts. PS: I actually did have orange bell bottoms when I was 14; but have never owned a pink tank top...only a green one. Quote "People [rarely] see...the bright light which is in the clouds..." aldona Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 Quote: The last time I checked being left-handed wasn't historically considered a moral sickness. You obviously weren't around 50-100 years ago when left-handed people were forced to write with their right hand at school, and beaten over the knuckles if they failed to comply. If you go back far enough in history, in medieval times they were actually feared and looked upon as in league with the Devil. They were even persecuted at times, like witches. This is one reason why the word "sinister" has the meaning it does. It originally meant "left" in Latin. Even today, my husband was recently given a strange look when eating with a group of devout Muslims and he used his left hand. When asked why, they explained that they believe "the devil does everything with his left hand." A lot of gay people actually use the historical example of left-handers to illustrate people's attitudes to those who are different, and to highlight their own fight against discrimination. Moderators Nan Posted August 13, 2010 Moderators Posted August 13, 2010 I think there are much more basic functions people of Middle Eastern descent do with their left hands....which is why it is an insult to offer them your left hand in greeting. Quote
