Moderators Bravus Posted September 27, 2010 Moderators Posted September 27, 2010 IMO everyone in the world needs to have a real sense of just how large the universe is. Different people react to that in very different ways, of course. At least, again IMO, it ought to be an antidote to 'small Gods'... Quote Truth is important
Moderators Gerr Posted September 27, 2010 Moderators Posted September 27, 2010 But if there is no God and our existence is only a chance accident, then there is nothing profound or meaning about our existence. Quote
Outta Here Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 Interesting thoughts. I think there can still be a profound nature to our existence even without the "knowledge" of God. Some adult atheists find our very existence profound. Some children who have never even heard of God find the size and expanse of our universe to be overwhelming. Then, there are people who are like my son: when they begin to think of the vastness of all existence, they have to stop because they get nauseous and pass out. Quote

Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony. Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?
cardw Posted September 27, 2010 Author Posted September 27, 2010 But if there is no God and our existence is only a chance accident, then there is nothing profound or meaning about our existence. I have never said that there was no god. I have said that I doubt that if there is a god it is the one described in the Bible. Even Carl Sagan didn't believe that life came by chance. It was his contention that as long as the conditions were right life would emerge. The point is that we don't have any way to know what first cause is. We may call it god, but that is too small. LifeHiscost Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 To consider this requires me to really rethink what we know. Considering the vast possibilities of life and its variety within the universe it is staggering to me that we limit our description of what is true to holy books. "The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork."Psalm 19:2 NKJV " When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained, What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him? For You have made him a little lower than the angels, And You have crowned him with glory and honor. You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet, All sheep and oxen— Even the beasts of the field, The birds of the air, And the fish of the sea That pass through the paths of the seas. O LORD, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth!" Psalms 8:3-9 NKJV "So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them."Genesis 1:27 NLT God blesses! Quote Lift Jesus up!!
LifeHiscost Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 Even Carl Sagan didn't believe that life came by chance. It was his contention that as long as the conditions were right life would emerge. Scientists have now concluded that for an amoeba to have come into being by chance over the periods of time in the past, it would have had to have been at a minimum of 10 to the power of 80, a figure which to them puts it beyond the realm of possibility. Intelligent design is so easy to accept by the less than proud. I read in an article in an interview with Carl Sagan, that he stated he received some of his most profound ideas while high on marijauna. Makes a good case for where a good proportion of the wisdom of man comes from. Strange that you would disbelieve that God, Who made man, is so insufficient and incompetent that He wouldn't leave a written record of Himself for the amazing mind He created to comprehend Himself, when put under control of His Holy Spirit, giving man the free choice to accept or reject what Love has to offer. "Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!"Romans 11:33 NKJV God Blesses! Quote Lift Jesus up!!

Could you provide references for this? I have no doubt it is true, and that is why I would like to see the evidence. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Moderators Bravus Posted September 27, 2010 Moderators Posted September 27, 2010 First and larger point: what a pity that, when offered an opportunity together to ponder 'the profound nature of our existence' our first impulse was to just wander back into the same old petty squabbles. Perhaps we need a dose of God-to-Job 'shuddup and listen' medicine... Smaller point: the 10^80 figure comes from a Walter Veith presentation, I believe, and if you listen to what he says he basically pulls that number out of... the air. Quote Truth is important

Yes cardw that was awesome, thanks for the post. For me it just makes God that much more personal.
