(AP) The publishing arm of the Seventh-day Adventist Church says it's cutting 36 jobs in Hagerstown as part of a reorganization aimed at stemming millions of dollars in losses. The Review and Herald Publishing Association said Monday that the unit's new managers are taking action after years of flatlining sales and financial losses including a projected $2.4 million loss this year. The association says the revitalization plan includes streamlining operations and developing more digital products. Spokesman Kim Peckham tells The (Hagerstown) Herald-Mail he expects the association to continue publishing the free monthly Adventist World magazine and the subscription magazine Adventist Review. The association moved its book and magazine publishing operation to Hagerstown in 1983. Press will be outsourced overseas because of the loss of income. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it is. People don't buy as many books as they used to, either. I know people who don't buy any books any more because they get everything they want on the Internet or in audio-book. It's a different world. I still love real books-- of the kind that Ray Bradbury wrote in his famous novel-- but too many other people don't. Wouldn't it be something if they were outsourced to China?!! I doubt that will happen but theoretically it could. More likely it will outsourced to somewhere like the Philippines (or the Congo?), I think. When did they almost hire you? What would you have done there? Back in the early 70s, I went to the publishing house in Mt. View, California, and asked about work, but that was before they moved to Idaho. That was while I was a student at Pacific Union College. I remember their pay was really low then. Members phkrause Posted October 2, 2010 Members Posted October 2, 2010 When I got out of HS I got hired at FFT when they were in NY. When they moved to California back in '72, we moved there. While there I would drive up to San Jose every other weekend. On one trip we drove to the PP officies and took a tour of the place, I asked what it would take for me to work there. They said I'd have to go through the proper channels, I could not just fill out an application. I moved back to NY and was offered a job up at AUC press. Have been here ever since. But have applied to the R&H, PP, and the Media Center since but never heard from them. The only time I did hear from them was within the last few years only to tell me they where not hiring. I would've liked to end my career working for the church. Not that its better than other places but only because that's where I started.
