Moderators Bravus Posted October 7, 2010 Moderators Posted October 7, 2010 Shared this here before but it bears repeating: "Trust those who are seeking the truth, doubt those who find it" - Andre Gide Quote Truth is important
Moderators John317 Posted October 7, 2010 Moderators Posted October 7, 2010 What's the reference for that Gide quote? It might be his Notebooks but it could also be several other books. Have you read much by him? I loved his writings, especially Strait Is the Gate, The Immoralist and The Coiners (The Counterfeiters). He used to be someone I greatly admired and wanted to be like. Gide started out as a very religious protestant, but he ended up an atheist and for a while he professed to be a communist who supported Stalin. He was homosexual (actually a "proud pederist" who went to Algeria with Oscar Wilde to visit the boys there), but married his cousin, a very religious woman who despaired of Gide's lifestyle and atheism. He defended homosexuality in a book called Corydon, which I read and re-read while in the army. In it he attempts to show that homosexuality is completely "natural" as it occurs even among the animals. He considered it his most important book, but like a lot of great writers, he was a poor judge of his own works. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Moderators John317 Posted October 7, 2010 Moderators Posted October 7, 2010 The problem is that Gide wanted people to believe his "truths," including those in his book, Corydon, but yet Gide rejected all the truth in the Bible, including Christ's words. Instead he accepted the truths of Marx and Darwin and for a while Joseph Stalin. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Moderators John317 Posted October 7, 2010 Moderators Posted October 7, 2010 All credibility, all good conscience, all evidence of truth come only from the senses. Friedrich Nietzsche Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Moderators John317 Posted October 7, 2010 Moderators Posted October 7, 2010 If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they'll kill you. Oscar Wilde Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Moderators Bravus Posted October 7, 2010 Moderators Posted October 7, 2010 They pretty much killed Wilde anyway... In taking the epigram from Gide I'm not extolling his whole life and work. I've just found that epigram a reliable guide to the people I can trust in life. Those who've found the truth usually have their hands in my pockets, or want to put them in even less appropriate places... Quote Truth is important
Overaged Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 Stan's comment makes sense to me; but can you explain this quote you referenced? It looks like some foreign language to me; I don't get what is meant by it. Please forgive my density. Quote "People [rarely] see...the bright light which is in the clouds..." (Job 37:21)"I cannot know why suddenly the stormshould rage so fiercely round me in it's wrathBut this I know: God watches all my pathAnd I can trust""God helps us to draw strength from the storm" - OveragedFaith makes things possible; it does not make them easy, Steps To Christ
Moderators Bravus Posted October 7, 2010 Moderators Posted October 7, 2010 I take it to mean that people who are seeking the truth are likely to be trustworthy people. Those who don't care about truth at all - who are not actively seeking it - are not people you could safely trust. On the other hand, those who claim to have found it (all of it), and to therefore no longer need to seek the truth, are not to be trusted, in my opinion. For a start, God is infinite, so the truth is infinite. In a finite lifetime it's impossible to know all of the truth. There is always more for us to learn. Therefore, those who claim to have found the truth are likely fibbing, and in my experience they're often doing that with the aim of controlling me in some way. They want my money, my votes, my allegiance or whatever. Only my experience, and I could be wrong, but I find it rings true to experience. Quote Truth is important
Overaged Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 Well; I can appreciate what you are saying re our experience; but I have always taken people more at face value. To me; if someone is not really seeking the truth; but just quietly lives the right they do know, they can be more trustworthy than a well-studied theologian who is constantly digging for more truth. Quote "People [rarely] see...the bright light which is in the clouds..." Moderators John317 Posted October 7, 2010 Moderators Posted October 7, 2010 That's true about Wilde. Not too many people wanted anything to do with him after he got out of prison. He hadn't many friends after that. I was sure you didn't extol everything by Gide just because you quote something by him. I can enjoy reading quotes I don't completely agree with because they can still give us insights. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Moderators John317 Posted October 7, 2010 Moderators Posted October 7, 2010 But in the case of Gide, he didn't want to believe in Christ or that the Bible is true. He was resisting God because of his lusts and desires to do what the Bible and Christ condemn. These things come out in his writings, particularly his journals. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Moderators Gerr Posted October 7, 2010 Moderators Posted October 7, 2010 But I have noticed a number of people over the years coming to the forum especially the theology section, purporting to be seekers of truth when in fact they are just as closed minded as they can be. They're just interested in propagating their point of view. Can't trust these either. Quote

Very True Overaged. Those well-studied theologians are well dug into their particular biases and well stuck in the mud. Those who speak the loudest often are the weakest in the faith department.
