Moderators lazarus Posted October 18, 2010 Moderators Posted October 18, 2010 Every year I do a series of sermons on controversial/difficult topics. I call it Hot Potatoes of course stolen from Martin Weber book. This year I've preached on the KJV only issue, last Sabbath I preached a sermon entitled "The Most Segregated Hour". You can guess what that is about. Any topic suggestions? Quote Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. Moderators lazarus Posted October 18, 2010 Author Moderators Posted October 18, 2010 Is John Paulein on that list? He would have some interesting things to say on the common ground issue and the various "mosque" threads we've had. Quote Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. Moderators Kevin H Posted October 19, 2010 Moderators Posted October 19, 2010 Every year I do a series of sermons on controversial/difficult topics. I call it Hot Potatoes of course stolen from Martin Weber book. Thinking of that book, all I can say is be careful with these topics. Some of the first steps in William Glasser's Choice theory is that we get information from the outside world, which we filter through our knowlege filter and our value's filter. While I really like Martin Weber as a person; he did not have the knowlege filter to be fair to all the topics he dealt with. Thus there were some very excellent chapters, but other chapters that he was just clueless about and was able to discuss in a fair, respectful and useful way. He was honestly trying to make sense, but did not have the foundation to build on, his mind filtered the information through a wrong model and kept wanting to make square pegs fit round holes. And sadly at least his his work on say Graham Maxwell, had lead to self fulfilling problems. People read what he wrote about what he imagins Maxwell to be teaching, and they end up likeing Maxwell and support Maxwell, but their view of Maxwell is not what Dr. Maxwell teaches, but a mish-mash of what Dr. Maxwell may be teaching but with Weber's misunderstandings, and they are teacwhing others and believing in their hearts that what Weber said about Maxwell is what they are suposed to believe. I use to consider myself much more Maxillian than I do today. Part is realizing (and much of this I still need a clearer grasp of) some differences between methods used from Graham Maxwell, from what he probably should have done, althought believing that Maxwell himself still reached some correct conclusions, in as far as he went. But another reason for my considering myself as less Maxwellian today than I use to is because too many who claim to be Maxwellian have this mishmash of Maxwells ideas mixed with things that people such as Weber and others say Dr. Maxwell is teaching. While I believe that what Maxwell himself teaches is generaly consistant with the Bible, I find the ideas that Weber said that Dr. Maxwell teaches to be very unbiblical. Too many who have read this and think they have sided with Maxwell have accepted these un-Biblical that comes out of Weber's and other's writings as their own. Please becareful to be fair and respectful to the views you are criticizing otherwise you may mislead many down the wrong path. Quote

It's not really about criticizing anything or anyone. It's about what the Bible says about a particular topic that is/has been controversial or difficult.
