Woody Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 Okay. I searched and searched for the Auto Repair Forum. Couldn't find it. So, I will have to call on all of you Auto Experts for some advice. Does anyone know how to turn off the Engine Warning Light? Mine has been on for over a month . (I have no idea why.) It's annoying to see it on. It's been my experience that it comes on when I don't tighten the gas cap enough. But it usually goes away after I tighten it up again. My concern is that if there were a reason for it to be on ... I would not know. It's just routine for me to ignore it because it cries 'wolf' too many times. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.

My hsuband does that with his pickup Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. It's not your parents, your past relationships, your job, the economy, the weather, an argument, or your age that is to blame. Woody Posted October 22, 2010 Author Posted October 22, 2010 Of course ... duct tape or duck tape ... either one. I should have known it. The big cure-all. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.

Moderators Gerr Posted October 22, 2010 Moderators Posted October 22, 2010 I don't know much about auto mechanics, but I can almost guarantee you that sooner or later, the real engine problem will show up. I had that happen in my BMW - engine warning lights coming on. When it first came on, I stopped at an automobile service station like Good Year. They checked it perfunctorily and seemed to find nothing wrong, so I continued to drive it for sometime. Sometimes it would spontaneously turn off. Then the brake warning lights started coming on also. I had it checked out by an independent BMW center. They replaced the brake sensor cables. Both warning lights went off, but a week later the engine warning lights came on again. Since nothing seemed to be otherwise wrong, I continued to drive it. Then one day, the car wouldn't go more than 55 mph, and before long couldn't go faster than 20 mph. Had it towed to the dealer and found the problem through their sophisticated engine diagnostic gadgets that hooked the car to their factory or wherever. There was something wrong with the "harness", whatever that is. They replaced it and the car has been fine since. Quote
GreatLakesGramma Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 Gerry, they were talking about the wiring harness. The harness holds the electrical wires together in a bundle, with fuses. GreatLakesGramma Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 Woody, my son bought a diagnostic reader for the computer in his car. Anytime the warning light comes on, he can find it himself, following the directions in the manual. I don't know what they're called, but they are specific to the year, make & model of the car. I personally would recommend you get one and check your car yourself. It's better than ignoring a genuine problem, because some things, if you let them go until whatever is malfunctioning quits entirely, it can be much, much more expensive to repair or replace the part than if you catch it early on. cricket Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 Since OBD II the engine warning light will come on if you do not tighten the gas cap to at least three "clicks". This triggers a low pressure seal and the light is warning you that there is a problem with the fuel system. Take your car to Auto Zone. They'll reset your check engine light free of charge. Then, keep your gas cap tightened properly. Quote

Members phkrause Posted October 22, 2010 Members Posted October 22, 2010 Woody if you don't get the light to go off, you will not pass inspection. And than you will pay through the nose. Unless you have a mechanic you can trust. :) Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
GreatLakesGramma Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 I'm glad we don't have vehicle inspection here in Michigan. If husband doesn't find anything wrong, he tells me to ignore the lights. Sometimes in older high-mileage vehicles like I drive, the sensors have gotten worn and go off when there is no real problem. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
