Bugema University to pass out over 500 graduates

A total of 512 Bugema University students will this week be awarded various degrees and diplomas at the institution’s 16th graduation ceremony. The ceremony will be presided over by Dr Richard Rajarathinam and Dr Weymouth Spence, president of the Washington Adventist University in Maryland, USA. The university Vice Chancellor, Prof Patrick Manu says the number of graduates has increased from 450 last year. The graduation ceremony starts on Friday with a consecration, followed by baccalaureate on Saturday and commencement on Sunday.

“The increase in the number of graduands has been attributed to a high enrolment of students and hard work by the students to ensure that they complete in time,” Prof Manu said.“We normally have students evaluate their lecturers every semester to ensure that the quality of education is not compromised,” he said. “Those whom we see that they are not performing well, we offer advice.” He also revealed that the university is introducing an e-learning platform with a video conferencing facility, which will cater for the Arua, Mbale, Kasese and Lira upcountry learning centers. The videoconference facility is to cost Shs14million.

“The University will now run virtual classrooms in national and regional centers at the same time, reducing the number of lecturers who will be supposed to travel to those centres,” Prof Manu said. The university has 337 undergraduate students admitted at Elgon View College at Eldoret and Kisii Campuses in Kenya. The Seventh Day Adventist institution, fully accredited as a University by the Adventist Accrediting Association based in Maryland, USA currently has 3,000 students from 17 countries. Most of the students come from Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Zambia.

“Bugema University is a cosmopolitan university because we have students from 17 countries all over the world and they study peacefully as one society,” Manu said. Last year, the university signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Kenya Accountants and Secretaries National Examinations Board (KASNEB) to act as an examination centre for Ugandan students..
