cricket Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 Genesis 21:14-16 So Abraham rose up in the morning, and taking bread and a bottle of water, put it upon her shoulder, and delivered the boy, and sent her away. And she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Bersabee. And when the water in the bottle was spent, she cast the boy under one of the trees that were there. And she went her way, and sat overagainst him a great way off, as far as a bow can carry, for she said: I will not see the boy die: and sitting overagainst, she lifted up her voice and wept. Quote

Moderators John317 Posted November 11, 2010 Moderators Posted November 11, 2010 Right, pk. Most scholars believe he was 16. The word for "boy" can mean a teen-ager. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
cricket Posted November 12, 2010 Author Posted November 12, 2010 That's what I was thinking...at least 14. But, why then, would Hagar place him under a bush to die? That just paints a really silly image in my mind: a full-grown woman, carrying a teen-aged boy around on her shoulders and then placing him under a bush so that she wouldn't have to witness his death. Members phkrause Posted November 12, 2010 Members Posted November 12, 2010 I don't believe that the text is saying that she carried the boy on her shoulders, the water is the way I read it. cricket Posted November 12, 2010 Author Posted November 12, 2010 Okay, I see your point, pkrause. But...even if it was a water bottle and not the 14 something year old son that she carried on her shoulders, it's still a silly image in my mind. He's 14 something--why didn't he carry the water? why did he just want to give up and die? why didn't these two try and DO something? Quote
Dr. Shane Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 He didn't carry the water because that's a woman's job. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity
Moderators John317 Posted November 12, 2010 Moderators Posted November 12, 2010 Shane, you're so right. The cultures of the mideast still are like that today. I have Muslim friends from Afghanistan, and of course that culture is a warrior society, and it still affects how they think after they've been here for 20 years. The father would be very angry if his boys were to do work in the kitchen. That's women's work. They make a clear distinction between what it means to be a man and what it means to be a woman. Moderators John317 Posted November 12, 2010 Moderators Posted November 12, 2010 The Koran indicates that Ishmael, not Isaac, was the son of promise and the son that Abraham was told to sacrifice.
