Moderators Gerr Posted November 24, 2010 Moderators Posted November 24, 2010 I was at a funeral recently. Not only was the memorial a tribute about the deceased, but also an excellent sermon on the state of the dead and the hope we have beyond the grave. Quote
Moderators John317 Posted November 24, 2010 Moderators Posted November 24, 2010 My dad gave the talk at one of his aunt's funerals. He made it an opportunity to tell about my aunt's life but he also preached a little sermon on the state of the dead and then gave an appeal for people to give their lives to Christ. It was excellent. When and if I die, that's exactly what I want the speaker at my funeral to do. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony. Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?
Administrators Gail Posted November 24, 2010 Administrators Posted November 24, 2010 If you came from my family, you wouldn't even get that. My family doesn't have funeral services. I do remember one for one uncle that the funeral home did, just a short thing. Members phkrause Posted November 25, 2010 Members Posted November 25, 2010 No sermons! Give the deceased their due, the happy times, what their life meant to others, family, friends. It should be a joyful time, yes we miss and will miss them, but their future is bright, their next breath begins an eternity of life. No trying to use their time to add more numbers. There is a time for sermons on the state of dead and alter calls, this ain't the time. I agree, but have no problem if it happens. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Stan Posted November 25, 2010 Author Posted November 25, 2010 I tend to agree with Pam. I was at a funeral about 2 years ago, maybe 3, where the Pastor gave a Bible Study on the state of the dead. The people needed to know how to get through this, how we all need to get together to help out the family during their crisis. How did Jesus handle a death of a friend... Bible says he weeped. it does not say he gave a Bible Study, it is ok to cry, Jesus did that. Sure, the fact that there is the promise of the resurrection is critical and the other promises. The person's life, the example of things Christ would do, and the things we should do should be high up there. To encourage us to live a live that is honourable and just. I have never heard anyone say, and YES he did not eat eggs for over 20 years or he never smoked he never drank etc etc but the things they did do that affected the life's of others, and to challenge us to live a life that makes a difference as well. BUT to give a BIBLE STUDY on what happens when you die? How empty and useless was that? Just my opinion Quote If you receive benefit to being here please help out with expenses. https://www.paypal.me/clubadventist Administrator of a few websites like https://adventistdating.com
