Administrators Gail Posted March 17, 2005 Administrators Posted March 17, 2005 Which magazines do you currently subscribe to? Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Moderators Nan Posted March 17, 2005 Moderators Posted March 17, 2005 The Journal of the Royal Australian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecology and The Medical Journal of Australia. cricket Posted March 17, 2005 Posted March 17, 2005 All the magazines we recieve are gift subscriptions: National Geographic, Reader's Digest, World (a National Geographic magazine for children), Outlook, Adventist Review, Conference Communications, a few "free" Signs, Louie (a magazine for St. Louis teens), American Girl, and the Lego Catalogue (my son views this as "his" magazine!). GreatLakesGramma Posted March 17, 2005 Posted March 17, 2005 Womans Day, Today's Christian Woman My father-in-law subscribes to Birds and Blooms for me for Christmas, and to Readers Digest and Vibrant Life to both my husband and me, also for Christmas. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. "To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you." -- C. S. Lewis
Nicodema Posted March 17, 2005 Posted March 17, 2005 None, but we buy some at newsstands every now and again. We tend to buy New Scientist, B*tch, Harper's, and Bible Review. My mate buys them & sometimes I read them, sometimes not. Once in awhile we'll buy tech mags on Linux, programming, multimedia or web development, depending on the articles featured. The Adventist Review specials come to the house once in awhile though I'm not subscribed to the full periodical year. Quote "After such knowledge, what forgiveness?" -- T.S. Eliot
Moderators Jeannieb43 Posted March 17, 2005 Moderators Posted March 17, 2005 In North America the Adventist Review is sent free to all church members once monthly [i think each Union conference bears the cost for its members]. The weekly subscription, however, must be paid for by the subscriber. I wouldn't be without the Review. It has much in it which is inspiring; and it helps me keep up with the names of our church leaders around the world, and the work they're doing. The magazines which come to our house each week are too numerous to count. DH's medical journals still arrive regularly; my professional journals and also some hobby magazines for my avocation. But TIME, Newsweek, The National Geographic, Reader's Digest, and the church periodicals [Ministry magazine, Liberty, the Pacific Union Recorder, etc.], together with the Sierra Club magazine, hiking magazines... all keep me well supplied with sleep-inducing relaxation each night. Quote Jeannie<br /><br /><br />...Change is inevitable; growth is optional....
cricket Posted March 18, 2005 Posted March 18, 2005 The only reason I don't subscribe to the Review weekly is that the magazine can be read on-line for free. Kind of like my St. Louis Post-Dispatch and the Wall Street Journal. Quote

Pockey Posted March 18, 2005 Posted March 18, 2005 I get so many magazines, but most of them I throw away. My gf hooked up most of them for free somehow online, I just don't have time to read any of them. They're ok, but then she also gets me weird magazines like Field and Stream, and I said "what were you thinking!?" I couldn't survive 30 minutes in a field or stream. The ones I do like and read are: URB, New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Giant Robot, Res, Computer Music, The Week, um I think that's about it. But some of those magazines give me insomnia. Sometimes I'd rather just read SoP and have a peaceful sleep. Quote

Administrators Gail Posted March 18, 2005 Author Administrators Posted March 18, 2005 I just subscribed to Veggie Life and Vegetarian Times Hoping to get some good recipes Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Nicodema Posted March 18, 2005 Posted March 18, 2005 I used to subscribe to Veg Times. They did have good recipes as I recall. Quote "After such knowledge, what forgiveness?" -- T.S. Eliot
GreatLakesGramma Posted March 18, 2005 Posted March 18, 2005 Jeannieb43, not everyone in North America gets the monthly Review. We don't here in Michigan. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. "To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you." -- C. S. Amelia Posted March 19, 2005 Posted March 19, 2005 for some strange reason the monthly review only comes in my STBE's name. In fact all communications from the church comes in his name only. I've never existed with them. I wonder how things will work now that we are separated? Do single women exist as far as the church is concerned? Quote <p><span style="color:#0000FF;"><span style="font-weight:bold;"><span style="font-style:italic;">"Do not use harmful words, but only helpful words, the kind that build up and provide what is needed, so that what you say will do good to those who hear you."</span></span> Eph 4:29</span><br><br><img src="http://banners.wunderground.com/weathersticker/gizmotimetemp_both/US/OR/Fairview.gif" alt="Fairview.gif"> Fairview Or</p>
Moderators Jeannieb43 Posted March 19, 2005 Moderators Posted March 19, 2005 Hm-m-m-m. I never realized that some conferences don't supply the monthly Review subscriptions. That's too bad. [but how neat it is that it's available now online!] Quote Jeannie<br /><br /><br />...Change is inevitable; growth is optional....
Moderators Jeannieb43 Posted March 19, 2005 Moderators Posted March 19, 2005 Been through this experience myself.... Actually, for the first 15 years after my divorce, the church papers continued to arrive in my ex's name. But since the house was awarded to me in the divorce, and I stayed living in it, it made no difference to me how the subscriptions were listed. When I remarried and took my new husband's name, I asked the church secretary to change my name on the Union paper. I myself took care of notifying the Review, since I was also advising them I didn't need the duplication of two copies of each [monthly] issue. I wrote the Review, snail mail, I believe. Sending a mailing label from each of the two subscriptions so they could straighten it out. (None of this is automatic. You have to get the ball rolling as soon as you get your new address. Ex can also do it for himself if he chooses.) Quote Jeannie<br /><br /><br />...Change is inevitable; growth is optional....
Guest Posted March 19, 2005 Posted March 19, 2005 This thread reminded me of when I worked in the magazine and paperback book business.. and of this experience... I once (1979 OR 1980)went into a liquor store to buy a HUSTLER magazine..and my wife was with me... this was 25 years ago... I paid the money...$3.50?? and then because I knew he could get credit for the magazine return...I tore off only the page I wanted and gave the rest back to the owner. The part I kept was the back cover which was all white with the exception of these words in LARGE BOLD RED CAPS.... "JESUS IS COMING SOON AND BOY IS HE [censored]". There was a customer/friend talking to the owner You should have seen the looks on their faces when I tore off just that back cover to keep ...and handed the rest to the owner.. Quote

_david Posted March 19, 2005 Posted March 19, 2005 same here, everything comes to my name from teh church. Like forever since i've been baptized. All applications and request for donations all came to my name and i wasn't even in high school yet. Anways still continues like that to this day. Never have called them, i don't want them to messed things up. Things like that seem to follow me around. :-) Quote //_david
Amelia Posted March 19, 2005 Posted March 19, 2005 I forgot one. My gf gave me "Real Simple" for Christmas. So I have one mag to call my own. But I did drop all the ones I was paying for. Michelle Posted March 20, 2005 Posted March 20, 2005 I think the "Free" Review is union based--and Lake Union is the only one I'm aware of which does not subscribe--I was quite shocked when we moved there to MI, as every other place I'd lived did. However, accessing it online is just as easy. Plus I don't feel guilty if I don't get around to reading it, like I'm wasting trees, or something like that. We get Time Asia edition, Car and Driver, Dialogue (free for Adventist college instructors), and the boys get Ranger Rick, Your Big Backyard, and Zoobooks. My mom sends me her Women of Spirit and Readers Digests (and Country, etc--which I keep for the boys to cut pictures out of). We used to get Smithsonian, which I love when I have time to read it, but it wasn't worth the extra to have it sent here, so we let it lapse before we moved. M Quote

Amelia Posted March 20, 2005 Posted March 20, 2005 I will miss "Signs" the most. There is a place in "town"(portland) where I can get it for free. I just have to remember to go look for it when Im in that area working. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif" alt="" /> Quote <p><span style="color:#0000FF;"><span style="font-weight:bold;"><span style="font-style:italic;">"Do not use harmful words, but only helpful words, the kind that build up and provide what is needed, so that what you say will do good to those who hear you."</span></span> Eph 4:29</span><br><br><img src="http://banners.wunderground.com/weathersticker/gizmotimetemp_both/US/OR/Fairview.gif" alt="Fairview.gif"> Fairview Or</p>
