Administrators Gail Posted December 13, 2010 Administrators Posted December 13, 2010 None of my chilluns will be home for Christmas. By home, I mean MY home. They are all grown up now and have "homes" of their own. Three out of the five want no gifts. Two are actually going to tell their little nieces and nephews that they are not going to buy any gifts, but will donate money in each child's name to a cause of their choosing. I sent them presents anyway... just a few small things as well as including money for their prize causes. My son is so anti-commercialism, especially after his years in Africa, where he really re-defined his views on what is important in life. His wife is right there with him. My daughter is cooking 2 dinners for those who are "non-remembered" at Christmastime. One dinner for the street people she volunteers with, and another at church. Should be good! I would love to go myself, except that I try at this stressful time not to tax myself. I may change my mind on that... I participated in a underprivileged kids' Christmas party today and I didn't get too tired even after hours on my feet. I might be able to swing one more. I did offer a pot full of vegetables for the street people's dinner at least. My eldest son and his wife will spend the day back East with her widowed mom. She has cancer and who knows how many Christmases they will have left with her. This might be the last. As many of you know, Christmas was for many years a struggle for me and it is still a difficult time emotionally. I love my family but hate the big THING that Christmas can become. But even though my family has chosen unconventional ways to celebrate, I can't help but be proud of them all. They are like their mother, not afraid to create traditions that are not culturally pressured. But--- who then do I cook for on Christmas Day? My hubby said, "Look- you can BUY a Christmas dinner for $7.00. That's all I need!" Not having to cook on the big day means that my time will be freed up!
