Moderators John317 Posted December 31, 2010 Moderators Posted December 31, 2010 Great article. I love the KJV-- my favorite English translation, although I do use many others. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Members phkrause Posted December 31, 2010 Members Posted December 31, 2010 I guess I am a rebel , I just don't like it that much. But I did like the article very much. Moderators Bravus Posted December 31, 2010 Moderators Posted December 31, 2010 Very nice work on Mark's part and a thoroughly enjoyable article. Here's a link to my blog post about Dawkins' discussion of the KJV, which in turn links to his article: http://www.bravus.com/blog/?p=2182 Will be linking Mark's article in the comments section of that blog post. Dr. Shane Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 I love reading the book of Job from the KJV. It is a masterpiece of poetry. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity
Moderators John317 Posted January 1, 2011 Moderators Posted January 1, 2011 What's your favorite translation, pk? Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Administrators Gail Posted January 1, 2011 Administrators Posted January 1, 2011 I think that for pk, English is his second language. I can understand why the King James Version would be difficult for him. Last night I watched a DVD on the history of the KJV, very good, called, "KJV- The Making of the King James Bible". It was an informative look into the politics of the time and the environment that birthed the version. I did not know that the Puritans preferred the Geneva Bible (because they were against government and the Geneva Bible tends to refer to kings as "tyrants"), or that if Guy Fawkes' plot to blow up the Parliament would have succeeded then a Catholic monarch would have been placed on the throne and the KJV project would have been axed. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Members phkrause Posted January 1, 2011 Members Posted January 1, 2011 What's your favorite translation, pk? I actually like most other versions John. But I prefer the Complete Jewish Bible, the one online which is the OT only, since its translated by Jewish scholars (and they don't except the NT). And the one translated by David Stern, which is the O&NTs. I really love those. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Administrators Gail Posted January 1, 2011 Administrators Posted January 1, 2011 pk, I have a Jewish NT by Stern, but have never really delved into it. Why do you enjoy it so much? With your endorsement I might just take a second look! Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Members phkrause Posted January 1, 2011 Members Posted January 1, 2011 Its written for Jews and Christians, and of course anyone one else who wants to read it. It has many other things in it to explain why it was written and many other things. One of the things Jews dislike about the KJV and other versions is that they are translated from the Greek Bible and not directly from the Hebrew. At least this is what I read on the Jewish websites. Whereas the two Complete Jewish Bibles are translated directly from the Hebrew for the OT and the Greek for the NT. They come from a different perspective. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Moderators John317 Posted January 1, 2011 Moderators Posted January 1, 2011 Yes, I have the David Stern translation too. I like it. It is very interesting. I notice that Stern believes that 1 Cor. 16: 2 is talking about Saturday night after the Sun went down on Sabbath evening, the Corinthians were to examine their finances and decide what to give for the offering. I believe the same thing. The Sabbath was not viewed as a good time to look into matters of business. Stern's introduction to the Complete Jewish Bible is also very interesting. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Moderators John317 Posted January 1, 2011 Moderators Posted January 1, 2011 .. One of the things Jews dislike about the KJV and other versions is that they are translated from the Greek Bible and not directly from the Hebrew. At least this is what I read on the Jewish websites. Actually, the KJV was translated from the Hebrew in the OT and the Greek in the NT. But the KJV translators also compared it to the old Latin and to some of the older translations. But they followed the Hebrew in the OT and the Greek in the NT. They used the same Greek text, the Erasmus text, which Luther used to make his German translation. Most of the NT in the KJV is the work of William Tyndale. By the way, the Jewish Publication Society's translation prior to the current one was almost the same as the KJV. Stern mentions this fact in his Introduction to the Complete Jewish Bible. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Problem is you have to convince the Jews of this. I go to this Jewish website and they don't believe that. If you are correct, which I don't see why not, than why do they believe that Christians are lying and changing the translation to suit themselves. When I get a chance I'll copy & paste some of there statements on the subject. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Moderators John317 Posted January 2, 2011 Moderators Posted January 2, 2011 Yes, I would like to see them some time. I would be interested to see what specific verses or passages in the KJV they object to. Perhaps Daniel 9: 24-27 and other Messianic prophecies? Have you read anything from the Jewish Publication Society's translation, published in 1917, 1945, 1955? As I say, it says that it was translated from the Masoretic Text, and it reads very much like the KJV. This JPS edition is one that was often used in Jewish synagogues. It probably still is used, although it's being replaced by the a new translation. I really enjoy the most recent JPS translation, which came out about 1985. Here's a site that describes the manuscript basis for the translation of the KJV: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Authorized_King_James_Version It includes this well-attested observation in regard to the KJV: Quote: In common with most other translations of the period, the New Testament was translated from Greek, the Old Testament was translated from Hebrew text, while the Apocrypha were translated from the Greek and Latin. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
