That doesn't mean that much area is flooded, but that there are floods within those local government areas. The floods are expected to rise to about 6 metres in Brisbane over the next couple of days, which would inundate 9000 houses and displace 15,000 people. We came home from work at lunchtime yesterday and are very glad we did, because if we had waited to come home at the normal time the road would have closed and we wouldn't have got home. At some point the four winds will start to blow and there will be no recovery. I'm sure we in the developed world will feel a strong blast, held to account for our lukewarmness, unless we repent and change. Too late for this to happen on a national or corporate scale. Couple of local photos on my Facebook, and I'll go out with the camera (keeping out of everyone's day) tomorrow morning early when the flood is expected to peak. We're still safe and fine, but our thoughts and prayers are with many who are not. They have increased the estimate to 20,000 flooded houses in Brisbane now. The spirit has been excellent: footage of people in church halls and other evacuation centres shows them laughing and smiling and enjoying each others' company. Plenty of stories of people saving others from the waters, and helping others evacuate. Quote Truth is important

Moderators LynnDel Posted January 12, 2011 Moderators Posted January 12, 2011 In viewing the video you linked to a couple days ago, Bravus, of the cars washing downstream as the waters rose, I assume the car owners had no idea the waters were rising, or they would have driven their cars to safety. Is that correct? Since there were breaks in the video, I couldn't tell how much time passed between the beginning of the video to the time where it was no longer safe to move the cars. Also, I notice that many of the houses seen in the flood photos appear to be built on stilts, or with living quarters above ground level. Specifically more film footage. With dozens of camera crews on the scene, why is some of the most dramatic evidence coming from a handycam in an apartment window? I don't think there have been any Sabbaths on which to preach it since the worst of the disaster unfolded. (The floods have been going on for a couple of weeks but the most serious emergency seems to have developed since the weekend.) 2. This coming Sabbath, any churches situated in the affected areas are likely to be closed (and/or underwater) so another opportunity to preach gone. 3. You are going to find it hard to convince people that this is an end-time event in a country where these kinds of things are cyclical and come around every few years to decades (and have been doing so ever since Dorothea McKellar published her "drought and flooding rains" poem in 1908, and long before). If you start talking to someone in Queensland at the moment about the flood being an end time event, you'll probably get told "Yeah, that's nice - and so were the floods of 1974, and so were the massive floods of 1893...now please help me get the mud out of my house." ADRA has been working on the front lines helping people along with Red Cross and other charity organizations, and has been mentioned in the media for doing so. That is much more likely to gain the respect of the public (and interest people in our message) than any amount of preaching. Moderators Bravus Posted January 13, 2011 Moderators Posted January 13, 2011 Woke up in the middle of the night to find that the electricity had been turned off - most likely as a precaution as the folld peaked at 4 am this morning. Lived without power today until 2:30 pm - which in part meant we had mango sorbet for breakfast before it could melt, and played Scrabble on the back verandah because it was too hot to be inside. Went for a walk this morning and saw the local shops still under water but the waters starting to recede. The peak was a little lower than expected but still devastating for many. The cleanup will be huge and take some time. My university is closed until at least next Wendesday. The comment on the people laughing and smiling and making the best of a bad situation just flabbergasted me - sufficiently that I can't comment in any productive way so won't say anything further on it. I wonder if a great sermon would be to offer food and shelter to those most affected. Meet the needs perhaps is the first order of business. On another note. Ironically, this time last year we were still in the tail end of a drought and on heavy water restrictions... Dorothea McKellar had it right in her poem: I love a sunburnt country, A land of sweeping plains, Of ragged mountain ranges, Of droughts and flooding rains. They were talking about one of the rivers running through a town being up by over 13 metres: that's well over 40 feet. Bravus! I am glad you & your's are OK.
