Our Jehovah Witness friends say the name of Jehovah must go to every nation, and right they are..

The HOLY NAME movement... is wanting us to make sure we call upon the right name or another God will answer, and they are also right.

HOWEVER, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

Name and Character in the Bible go hand in hand. People changed their names when they changed their characters. Nuns will often take on a new name because of this tradition.

In North America, we will name our kids names like Randy. Try that in Australia, it is like naming your kid Fornicator.

What is the short version about this?

The whole theme of the Great Controversy is to vindicate God's Character. That is pretty much it.

It is HIS CHARACTER that we are to reveal to the world. That is the short version.

I told one of my buddies who is a Holy Name person, that I would not respond to him unless he called my name in the original language, otherwise how would I know it was me he was really talking to. He began to understand.

Chances are good God's native language is not English nor Hebrew.

So back to the question

Why the name of God is important to know? It is character.

there is no biblical demand to accept the sacrifice of the cross, on the condition that you learn to pronounce God's name in hebrew with an english accent.

I think you are right about importance. You do a study on "name" in the Bible, and see how often even God was involved in naming humans. Do we need to know our Savior's name? Yes!

Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Acts. 4:12

Not only is His name Jealous, but God has many other names in the Bible. They are all indicative of different aspects of His character. There might be even more that we don't know about. But the point is that you cannot box who God is up into something that we can grasp- He will always be bigger than the most we can understand.

Conversely, it also means that there is no one who has lived who cannot relate to God. He has a comfort and a strength for whatever you have gone through or whoever you are.

It is interesting that Jehovah's Witnesses place such importance on the name Jehovah, when the "J" was not even part of the phonetics of Hebrew or of Greek, if I understand correctly. "Jehovah" is reconstructed from Yahweh, and Yahweh is reconstructed from YHWH. If they were to follow their own reasoning, they would call themselves YHWH's Witnesses, since that is apparently the closest we can confidently get to the real name of God. I have talked with some JWs about this, but they are not open to discussion on it. Silence reigns.

"Jesus" is reconstructed from the Greek Iesous, which is a transliteration of the Hebrew Yeshua (also rendered Yahshuah, Yehoshuah, etc). I really love that name, for when you learn that Yeshua means, "Salvation," Matthew 1:21 and so many other verses contain so much more meaning! Salvation is what He is all about.

The Sacred Name Movement focuses on the use of Yahweh, but since YHWH is reconstructed only from the available consonants, their whole point is blunted.

God’s character is revealed in Exodus 34:

There are seven main attributes to God’s character which I will list with the Strong’s and Brown, Driver, Briggs definitions;

1) merciful (7349) rachuwm: merciful and compassionate

2) gracious (2587) channuwn: gracious

3) longsuffering (750) arek: slow, longsuffering, patient (639) aph: anger, wrath, face, nostrils, nose

4) goodness (2617) checed: mercy, kindness, lovingkindness, goodness

5) truth (571) emeth: stability, certainty, truth, right

6) forgiving (5375) nasa: lift up, bear, take, carry away

7) visiting (6485) paqad: number, visit, punish

God’s character is a perfect blend of all these attributes. In the OT God showed more of the punishing side of his character while in the NT Jesus exemplified more of the kinder attributes. There are seven colors in the rainbow that make up the color white which is associated with the spotless robe of Christ’s righteousness. If each attribute is assigned a color of the spectrum they would all blend together into the blinding white of God’s glory.
