Dottie Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 The brilliant Katie Couric didn't know what "@" meant? Quote
cricket Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Actually, the symbol being referenced in the clip was an enclosed-a. This particular symbol does not represent the same thing as the modern use of the @. They are two different symbols. Traditional use of the @ symbol was, indeed, the things she mentioned in the clip (i.e., "about" or "around"). It was also used as a method of representing the price of something (e.g., "at the rate of"). With the invention of the internet address, the @ is now most commonly used to represent a physical--albeit virtual--location, and is spoken as "at". Quote
