Cosmin M. Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Hey guys, I know its been a while since I have been on CA, I have been so busy with life, the only time I had for computer was like 5 minutes which I used to check my messages on Facebook. Well, new things... I'm going to a new school next week, cause I have this week off, a school based on sport, so I will have around 2 hours of sport everyday, it will be in the mountains and it will be a amazing site to see all those mountains every morning. Now, my question is, as a Christian, or even better, as a Adventist, what is your opinion on hackers? Are there good hackers? Or are all of them bad? Just wondering... Thanks guys! Also, whats new around here? :) Quote
Woody Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Hey COSMIN. Great to hear from you. And also it's great to see yur pic. Don't be a stranger here. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.

Moderators LynnDel Posted January 30, 2011 Moderators Posted January 30, 2011 A person should be allowed three bumps per year, and no useless ones. Ahem, Woody. Though I know yours had a purpose, same purpose a class clown has. Oh, I know you guys - I haven't been a teacher for years for nuttin'! Cosmin - it sounds like you're having a great time! I want your mountain views! IMO, hackers are useful sometimes, as in when you password protect all your stuff and forget the password. Also useful for nations in protecting their national security, though I can't think of any instances where they don't overstep into invasion of privacy for less than honorable reasons. Quote LD
cricket Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Also, depends on the meaning you intend to convey when you use the term hacker. See: Hacker definition controversy Quote
fccool Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Hackers don't always have to invade privacy. There are actually branches based on the area: Phreakers (Phreaks) - People who would explore and exploit phone services Hackers - General term for a person who exploits computer security loopholes to gain access to information Crackers - people who modify code in order to circumvent software protection algorithms Either one can be beneficial and detrimental to any system security. After all, if system security is not tested and patched, then there's a problem with security holes. On the other hand, justifying such invasion for the sake of patching up those holes is akin to stealing your car for the sake of you keeping it in a garage. Either way, all three groups aspire to the ideal of free flow of information and fight monopoly and licensing of knowledge. Both sides have their good points. I'm not really ready to jump in and defend either one, because it takes quite a bit of time and consideration. Quote
Moderators Bravus Posted January 30, 2011 Moderators Posted January 30, 2011 Yeah, people talk about 'white hat' and 'black hat' hackers - people who use their powers for good and evil. I'm friends with a *lot* of hackers, although my own skills are reasonably limited. To them, 'hacker' just means someone who is very interested and skilful in a particular field, so you could be a physics hacker, for example. They look down on people who use those skills to steal information, and call them 'crackers' (slightly different usage than fccool outlined above) or 'skiddies' (skript kiddies). For my friends, it's all about the skill. So you can be a good hacker if you *really* work and learn and practice at using computers. All real computer hackers know at least one and usually several programming languages. They may work at finding ways to circumvent security systems, but they then let the manufacturers know those ways exist so the loopholes can be closed. It would be worth your while to read Bruce Sterling's non-fiction book 'The Hacker Crackdown' for some history on this stuff. Quote Truth is important
Woody Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 I'm off checking about the history of bumpers. Do I have to make my research a new thread? Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
