Woody Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 On Hope Channel today Pastor Dwight Nelson had a good sermon. One of his statements might raise the ire of some: "Most missionaries are vactionaires." This was in reference to all the two week missionary trips. Which he states as the 'majority'. And the lack of sending mission trips to the Middle East where Jesus is really not known. He gave the stat of only 2% actually go to the Middle East. Your thoughts? nuff sed Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 Having spent 15 years out of the US I have to agree with Dwight though I did not hear his sermon. Sending the amount of money raised for two-week trips directly to the field and having the work done locally would be more cost-effective... BUT. most times it does the vacationares more good to go out and see how the rest of the world lives...While it may not be more cost effective, nevertheless, I believe it does do a lot of good to those who receive the help as they realize that the people who come to help are members of their extended family and are there to exemplify Christ in helping make their live better. The enthusiasm of some of the 'vacationares' sometimes make the difference as to whether a project goes forward or not....nuff sed Quote
GreatLakesGramma Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 I think it's mostly good for the vacationaires, whose lives are changed by what they see and experience, sometimes permanently. I know of one young woman who went to a very remote part of the Philippines for a year as a student missionary. She definitely acquired an attitude toward American materialism and excess. She is in medical school planning to become a full time missionary. That was always her goal though, even before the year in the Philippines.
