Liz Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 Well, I have my kids show their work, so that I can see the process they are using to arrive at their answer, even if it's right. It can either focus on a child and that can either puff one up or call attention to an already fragile self-worth. Having a child conquer a problem is how s/he develops self-esteem. Developing experience in licking a problem is empowering. Learning skills is empowering. This happened to me a long time ago: Once someone, after seeing a piece of drawing that I did, called me an artist. I balked at drawing after that and did not recover for many years. My inner child did not believe the comment. My inner child probably could not handle a fair critque, either. So be careful with the labels! This in itself is enligtening to both them and him. He uses that as part of their grade. Moderators Bravus Posted February 13, 2011 Moderators Posted February 13, 2011 Since I'm a teacher by trade but currently a student by choice I have a bit of a view from both sides of the desk. In our recent math exam, they said 'show your work - you might be brilliant enough to jump from A to G without going through steps B to F, but if you miss that jump you get zero marks for the question, whereas if you work it through and get as far as E, we can give you *some* marks'. What Gail said about showing drafts to the instructor and getting feedback along the way is part of how learning takes place, and 'scaffolds' the development of new skills (and is easier on the self-esteem, too, than only getting a grade on the final work without any opportunities to improve it along the way). And as Liz said, it's also very helpful to allow the teacher to diagnose exactly *where* the difficulty lies. If the student only shows steps A and G, I don't know *which* of the intervening steps s/he doesn't understand. Quote Truth is important

I think you have 'hit the nail' right on target....a perfect explanation for our own 'works' that God wants to see. Wow!! Thanks CoA. The One who 'looks on the heart' does not have that need. Thanks for that good perspective Bravus. The book Great Controversy though tends to explain the reason why we have to show our works.
